125 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND COUTURE, Claude Joseph Claude was born in Bathurst, New Brunswick on January 28, 1941. He enlisted in the Army in 1956 with the Royal Canadian North Shore. He had one maneuver in Gagetown, NB and some at the range in Rough Waters, NB. In late 1958 he went to Ontario to look for work. His employment spanned 34 years in the Auto Industry. Claude is a 45 year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 197 in Acton, Ontario. COWARD, Harold S. Harold was born in Toronto on July 15, 1921. He enlisted in the Navy on September 15, 1942. He served on the HMCS Annapolis, HMS Uganda and HMCS St. Francis as an Engineer and Mechanic in the engine room. He served in World War II on the Pacific and took part in the Battle North Atlantic and Mediterranean as Petty Officer. Harold was discharged in November 1945. He is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Cobourg Branch. COVERT, Douglas Melville “Doug” Doug was born on August 23, 1934 in Newtonbrook, Ontario. Following his public school education in Toronto, the family moved to a farm in Erin Township. Doug was an outstanding, popular student and graduate of Erin District High School. Doug enlisted in the RCAF on August 7, 1952. In Ontario he trained at Centralia where he received his Wings on June 11, 1953. Doug was posted to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba and promoted to Flying Officer. In April 1954, he drove his 1949 Ford from Ontario to Penhold, Alberta, sending his mother a postcard from every town he stopped overin on the way. In Penhold, Doug became an instructor on Harvard aircraft and part of his duty was training NATO pilots. On June 4, 1954 disaster struck, when the Harvard trainer crashed killing both Doug and Flight Cadet Svend Jark of Haderslav, Denmark. A full military funeral was held in Erin, Ontario on June 12, 1954, with six of Doug’s fellow high school students as pallbearers and six WWII Veterans serving as flower bearers. Douglas Melville Covert, age nineteen, was buried in the Erin Union Cemetery beneath a Union Jack draped casket to the sound of three volleys fired by a RCAF honour guard.
