147 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DRON, Edward E. “Ed” Edward was born in Erin Township, Ontario in 1889. In 1914 he tried to enlist in the Army in Toronto, only to be told he was too short. Ed re-applied in 1915 and the same officer deemed him acceptable at five-feet, four and one-half inches. Ed was wounded atYpres on June 9, 1916. He suffered a gunshot wound to the knee and was treated at No. 3 General Hospital in France. He was then sent to the Canadian Convalescent Hospital at Bear Wood in England. At the Battle of Regina Trench, Edward was serving with the 58th Battalion and was wounded again. His chest wound was treated at a field hospital, as Ed resisted going to a general hospital and returned to the trenches. In 1917, Ed was awarded the Good Conduct badge and awarded the Military Medal for bravery. Twice he went forward under continuous artillery fire. In part the citation stated: “He rendered invaluable service under the most trying conditions.”In 1918 Edward Dron was promoted to Sergeant. During the Battle for Amiens Ed was wounded and his left foot was amputated then fitted with a peg leg. He received a Bar to his Military Medal and was discharged in October 1919. Edward passed away in Guelph, Ontario in his 103rd year on December 3, 1992. DUBY, Leslie Albert Leslie was born in Guelph, Ontario on December 21, 1918. He enlisted in the Air Force on November 20, 1942. He served in Canada and England as Ground Crew Mechanic during World War II. He was discharged on March 17, 1946. He was a 34year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 197 in Acton. Leslie passed away on June 16, 1979. DUBY, Joseph Joseph was born in Ullswater, Watt Township, Ontario on February 8, 1898. He enlisted in the Army on April 19, 1916 and served with the 122nd Overseas Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force and the CFC Canadian Forestry Corps. He served in Canada and Ypres, France where he was gassed during World War II and was discharged in 1918. Joseph passed away on September 22, 1963.
