151 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DUFFY, William John “Jack” William was born in Windsor, Ontario on June 3, 1924. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1945. He served as a physical education instructor in Canada and England until his discharge in 1955. William was awarded the War Medal 1939-1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Stittsville Legion Branch 618 for ten years. William passed away on December 15, 1986. DURNFORD, Andrew William Andrew was born on April 2, 1897 in Tay Township, Ontario. Along with several friends, he enlisted in the Army in Coldwater with the 157th Overseas Battalion (The Simcoe Foresters), Canadian Expeditionary Force, on February 12, 1916. He was eighteen years old and single. On his Attestation Form, he was described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, with brown eyes and black hair. He identified his religion as Methodist and his trade as labourer with no previous military experience. Private Durnford sailed to England on the SS Cameronia, arriving on October 28, 1916. Within a month he joined the front line until in France, the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion (Western Ontario Regiment), part of the 1st Canadian Division. He was killed in action on the first day of the Canadian troops’ assault on Vimy Ridge on April 9, 1917. DUNFORD, Carl Orville Carl was born in Peterborough, Ontario on October 21, 1936 and joined the Navy in 1954, when he was seventeen years old. Carl was an Aircraft Gunner in the Royal Canadian Navy. He served two years on the HMCS Quebec including doing the Africa Cruise and the “Decommission of the ship” in 1956. He served one year on the HMCS Star - Hamilton, Ontario. Carl also served one year on the destroyer HMCS Nootka, prior to retiring in March 1959. Carl returned to Peterborough where he was employed by the Outboard Marine Company for 29 years. He first joined The Royal Canadian Legion in 1959 and is a member of the Peterborough Naval Association. He has been awarded the Legionnaire of the Year award.
