155 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND EDWARDS, Stanley Albert Stanley was born in Hilliard Township, Ontario. He was raised in the Arkona area, married Magdeline (Sitter), and was the father of Beverly and Joan Edwards. Stanley had a trucking business in Arkona. He enlisted in the Army in 1941 and trained with the Elgin Regiment in St. Thomas. He went overseas in June 1942. Stanley was a driver and mechanic. He was killed in a jeep accident and is buried in Bergen op Zoom, Netherlands. EMSLIE, William Duncan William was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec on July 17, 1924. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy at seventeen years old. He was sent to active duty in March 1943. He served on several ships, The Montreal, Cornwallis, Strathcona, Avalon, Naden, Donnacona and the Kokanee. He was on the North Atlantic run, with victory in Europe. He then joined the Pacific War, however prior to the Pacific patrols, victory over Japan was declared. He came home to Sherbrooke where he purchased his first home, a VLA home with his parents. This is where he met Margaret Coombs and they married in 1950. Together they had five children and Bill and Marg were married 61 years at the time of his death in October 2011. ELLIOTT, John Nixon “Jack” Jack was born on June 11, 1919 and raised in Toronto, Ontario. He enlisted in the RCASC on May 7, 1942 and completed his training at Camps Simcoe and Ipperwash. He served nine months with the 2nd/10th Dragoons at Sydney, NS infantry division before being transferred to the 1st Battalion, Algonquin Regiment at Debert, NS on February 16, 1943. He disembarked to the UK on June 19, 1943 and was assigned to Unit 3CIRU. On August 3, 1943 Jack transferred from the infantry to the RCASC and qualified for the motor vehicle division. He was promoted from Private to Lance Corporal before disembarking to Continental Europe on July 13, 1944 with the 47 Transport Unit. Jack drove supply trucks to the front lines with much needed food, fuel and supplies and participated in the liberation of Holland. His medals consist of the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the France and Germany Star, the 1939-1945 Star and the Defence Medal. He was officially discharged from the Canadian Army on January 15, 1946. Jack had married Lucille on March 11, 1943 and upon his return to civilian life he and Lucille raised a family of five children. Jack passed away on January 21, 1987. He was a thirty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 322, Ajax.
