165 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FIELDS, William Charles William was born in Windsor, Ontario on May 25, 1922. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on July 27, 1942 and was then sent to Dundurn, Saskatchewan for CAC Regiment training for eight months. From there, he would be sent overseas on March 28, 1943 to the UK for fifteen months as a gunner operator. William then spent the next seventeen months as Troop Sergeant in the Northwest of Europe. He received the 1939-1945 Star, Defence Medal and France and Germany Star for his service in World War II. William was discharged on February 27, 1946. He married Doreen L. Laesser of Windsor on September 29, 1947. They had two children and two grandchildren. He was known as a successful window and door businessman in the Windsor area. William passed away on February 21, 2000. FINDLAY, William John William was born in Thornhill, Ontario on February 13, 1916. He enlisted July 10, 1940 in Toronto with the Governor General’s Horse Guard, transferred to the Royal Regiment Reinforcement Unit and proceeded overseas on February 28, 1941. His Attestation Papers stated his trade as a Professional Golfer; Physical description on enlistment: 5 feet 8 ¼ inches tall; 136 lbs; hazel eyes; brown hair; fair complexion. He was raised in Thornhill and was a neighbor and close friend of Russell Wice who was also killed at Dieppe. He is commemorated on the family tombstone in Thornhill Community Cemetery. Private William John Findlay was killed in action in Dieppe, France on August 19, 1942 while serving with the Royal Regiment of Canada. William was initially listed as missing in action but eventually his body was washed ashore near De Panne, West Flanders, Belgium and he was buried nearby. In late 1945, his body was exhumed and buried in Adegem Military Cemetery, Belgium. FINCHAM, William Edward William was born in Toronto, Ontario on November 6, 1919. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Montreal on November 22, 1940 and trained as a Wireless Operator in Brandon, Manitoba. He flew for RAF as a Wireless Air Gunner from England. He was shot down over the Mediterranean and was taken as a Prisoner of War from 1942 to 1945 in Italy and Germany. He was discharged on September 21, 1945. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and War Medal 1939-1945. William passed away on December 25, 1985.
