189 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GATES, Richard Thomas Richard was born in 1914 in Ontario. He enlisted in the Air Force on June 6, 1941 as Squadron Leader. He served in England during World War II and was discharged on January 7, 1946. Dr. Gates received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He moved to Brigden in 1949 and practised medicine until his retirement 1974. It was a rural community and patients often paid him with fresh chickens, homemade bread, pies etc. and sometimes not at all, but he still always treated them. He was well-remembered in that community. Times have changed since then, and there are no more “Old-fashioned Country Doctors”. He was a Royal Canadian Legion member of the Brigden Branch 635. Dr. Gates passed away May 2, 2002. GIBSON, Ervin Keith Keith was born in Lanark, Ontario on February 18, 1936. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on October 15, 1953 and completed basic training in Clinton, Ontario. During 1956 and 1957, Keith served with the United Nations Emergency Force at El Arish, Egypt and later received the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal. Keith returned to Ottawa from 1957 to 1962 where he marriedWilma Bain and began a family of four children. Keith was posted to a NATO Base located in Fontainebleau, France from 1962 to 1965. He spent 1965 to 1967 at CFB in Portage la Prairie. From 1967 to 1972, Keith worked as a Mission Planner at 4 Wing, Baden-Soellingen, Germany and was a member of the NATO Tactical Air Weapons Competition each year while serving in Germany. Keith retired as a Warrant Officer in October 1973 and began a new career with the LCBO in his hometown of Lanark. He was an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 395 in Lanark for 37 years. He served two terms as President and chaired many committees on the executive. Keith passed away on June 28, 2006. GEDDES, Len Len was born in Toronto, Ontario on September 28, 1923. He enlisted in the Air Force in the fall of 1943 and served with the 436 Transport Squadron in the Burma Campaign and Mandalay Hill during World War II. He was discharged in the fall of 1945. He was a Life Member of 435-436 Burma Star Squadrons Association.
