195 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GLOVER, Joseph Albert Joseph was born on August 16, 1900 in North Gwillimbury, Ontario. He was residing at Langstaff, Ontario at the time of his enlistment on March 20, 1940. Physical description on enlistment: 5 feet 6¼ inches tall; hazel eyes; brown hair, medium complexion. He was married, his wife was Irene and they had two children: Alice Eleanor and Stuart Thomas. He listed his trade as famer. Lance/Corporal Joseph Albert Glover was missing in action at Dieppe, France on August 19, 1942 while serving with the Royal Regiment of Canada. Joseph is buried in the Dieppe War Cemetery, Hautot-sur-Mer, France. GOODE, Ernest Albert “Ernie” Ernest was born in Toronto, Ontario on April 15, 1916. He enlisted at Toronto on September 15, 1939, listed his trade as a farmer and his residence at the time as Richmond Hill. Physical description on enlistment: 5 feet, 9 inches; 147 lbs.; hazel eyes; black hair and dark completion. He can best be defined as a free spirit based on the number of charges against him; no less than 22 including one for AWL just twenty days before the Dieppe Raid. In most cases the penalty was C.B. (Confined to Barracks), there was some pay forfeited, some ‘admonishment’ and undefined field punishment. Private Ernest Albert Goode was killed in action at Dieppe on August 19, 1942 while serving with the Royal Regiment of Canada. He is buried in the Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery in Hautot-sur-Mer, France. His name is inscribed on the cenotaph at Richmond Hill, Ontario. GOODCHILD, Ronald W. “Ron” Ronald was born in Orillia, Ontario on May 7, 1942. He enlisted in the Army on December 1, 1961 and served with the 2nd Battalion, Queen’s Own Rifles on Reserves in Canada and in Calgary during the Cold War. He was stationed at Currie Barracks in Calgary, AB. Being a rifleman in an infantry regiment, Ron participated in numerous training exercises in Wainwright, AB for his combat capabilities. He also did a stint of guard duty, protecting the nuclear fallout shelter located in Red Deer, AB. During his tour at Currie Barracks, Ron acquired himself a motorcycle and toured the west coast. At the end of his three year hitch, Ron returned to Ontario and raised a family. He always said ‘My past military experience rekindled and encouraged me to become involved and serve’. True to his word, Ron became a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 270 in Coldwater serving in a number of positions, in particular Sergeant at Arms. Ron passed away on August 29, 2018, age 76.
