197 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GOODISON, Betty Lois Betty was born in Leamington, Ontario on August 12, 1943 and lived in Wheatley, ON. She joined the RCAF in September 1961 and served in Canada for five years. She was discharged on September 28, 1966. After service, she joined the Toronto Police and served from 1972 to 2003. Betty has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion since 2008, NATO Veterans Organization of Canada since 2006, Wheatley Branch 324 Executive from 2013 to 2017 and Riverside Branch 255 of The Royal Canadian Legion Colour Party at present. She won the Polar Carnival Queen title at Station Cold Lake, Alberta in 1965. Betty participated in Hometown Heroes banner program in Wheatley in 2016-2017. GORDON, Frank Nicholas “Francis” Francis was born in Cobourg, Ontario on February 9, 1910 to John and Mary Ann Gordon. He enlisted in the Army on July 23, 1940 and was in service unit 347th 5 LAA RCA Provost Corps. He received the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom, the Central Mediterranean Area and Continental Europe. When Frank returned to Cobourg, he worked at the Dominion Wheel and Foundry Plant and then he went to work at the General Foods Plant until he retired. He was married to Lilian Medhurst. Frank passed away on June 17, 1988. GOODWIN, James Frederick James was born on January 23, 1897 to Gillis and Alice (Franklin) in Glen Allan, Ontario. When World War I broke out, James joined the military on June 20, 1916 and received four months training in London, Ontario. He was then shipped to Europe with the 118th Battalion on January 23, 1917 aboard the SS Scandinavian. After the war was over, James returned to Ontario and settled in the St. Clements area where he married Winnifred Campbell. They had five children: Leroy, Lorne, Marguerite, Shirley and Ruth. He was employed with BF Goodrich Canada Ltd. for 35 years. After retiring, he moved to Waterloo. James was a member of the Moose Lodge and both the Kitchener and Waterloo Royal Canadian Legion Branches. James was the canteen steward for the Waterloo Branch for eight years. After a short illness in 1963, he died and is buried in the St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Heidelberg, Ontario. James Frederick Goodwin’s name is listed on the Plaque #1 of the Waterloo Legion’s Veteran Memorial Wall.
