25 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ADAMS, George Charles George was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 12, 1920. Prior to the war he was in the militia as part of the band for the Royal Regiment, and enlisted for active service on September 8, 1939. He served for a time in Canada, then in Iceland with the Z Force before going to England where they prepared for the Dieppe Raid. His brother Bill was also at Dieppe, however he survived and became a Prisoner of War. The Adams family lived in Richvale, Ontario just south of the Town of Richmond Hill, and were both friends of Charles Hill who was also killed at Dieppe. Private George Charles Adams was killed in action in Dieppe, France on August 19, 1942 while serving with the Royal Regiment of Canada. He is buried in Dieppe War Cemetery, Hautot-sur-Mer, France. George is commemorated on a plaque in St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Richmond Hill. ADAMS, William John “Bill” Private William “Bill” Adams was born in Toronto, Ontario on October 12, 1912 and was raised in Richvale, Ontario. He and his younger brother George enlisted with the Royal Regiment of Canada on September 9, 1939. Bill was part of the landing force for the Blue Beach raid at Dieppe. He was knocked unconscious by flying debris during the battle and taken prisoner. He ended up in Stalag 8B where he was used as force labourer in the mines and suffered further injuries. Three attempted escapes resulted in beatings, being shackled in chains and time in solitary. He participated in the infamous death march and was finally liberated on May 5, 1945. He married Doreen Hazelden on June 25, 1945 and returned to Canada. He joined the York Regional Police department in 1950 and served with them until he died on July 12, 1973 while on active duty as a Sergeant. ADAMS, Thomas Stanley Stanley was born in Bright, Oxford County in Ontario on April 26, 1895 to James and Janet (MacDonald) Adams. On February 28, 1916 he enlisted in Galt, Ontario with the 111th Battalion. After receiving basic training, he was shipped overseas with the rest of the 111th Battalion aboard the SS Tuscania on September 25, 1916. After the war was over, Stanley married Beryl Matilda (Motheral) and they had two boys, Bill and Bruce as well as two girls, Jean and Patricia. Stan and his son Bill owned and operated Adams Furniture, Upholstery and Draperies in Waterloo. Stanley passed away at ninety years of age in 1985 and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Kitchener.
