41 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ARMSTRONG, Thomas Millar Sr. Thomas Sr. was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on November 5, 1890. He enlisted with the 4th Battalion CEF and was attested at Valcartier on September 22, 1914. He received a shrapnel would at 2ndYpres onApril 23, 1915 when an artillery shell casing severely injured his left thigh. He spent 36 hours wounded on the ground before being evacuated. He was eventually returned to Canada as medically unfit on October 28, 1915. His medical records on discharge mention that he walked with a severe limp. He re-enlisted with the Veteran’s Guard in Toronto on June 17, 1940 and served in Toronto, Windsor and Gravenhurst before he was eventually admitted to the Gravenhurst Hospital on August 14, 1943. He died of acute leukemia in Toronto on September 8, 1943. His son, Thomas Millar Armstrong Jr. a resident of Richvale, Ontario was killed in Dieppe. ASHFIELD, Donald T. Donald was born in Derby, England on April 28, 1939. He joined the Navy at HMS Ganges on June 7, 1955. He trained until June 20, 1956 when he was drafted to HMS Cavendish, a destroyer. In November 1956 the ship sailed to the Mediterranean for the Suez Crisis and also the Cyprus problem. Donald was awarded the General Service Medal Near East. In October 1956 he was promoted to Ordinary Seaman and in June 1957 was drafted to HMS Drake the navy shore establishment in Plymouth. In November 1957 Donald was promoted to Able Seaman. From March 1958 to November 1965, Donald served on the HMS Cumberland a County Class cruiser used as a trial ship for new equipment, the HMS Cambridge a shore establishment near Plymouth for Gunnery training, the HMS Llandaff a frigate which sailed for the Far East for nine months in and around Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan, the HMS Wizard, the HMS Excellent, the HMS Diana and back to HMS Drake. Donald was discharged in 1966 with the rank of Leading Seaman, Gunnery Fire Control 1st Class. He married a Canadian girl in April 1965 and immigrated to Canada in March 1977. He then joined the Royal Naval Association in Toronto and awarded the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal for related work with the RNA. Donald is a 32-year member of the Cobourg Royal Canadian Legion Branch 133. ARNOLD, Henry Gairdner Henry was born in Donegal, Ireland on May 15, 1910. He enlisted in the Army in August 1939 with the Royal Artillery 8th Belfast ACK ACK Regiment. He served in England, France, India and Burma during World War II. He was a member of the Legion Branch Stittsville for three years. Henry passed away on September 11, 1983.
