63 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BENNETT, William G. “Bill” William was born in Toronto, ON on October 27, 1929. He moved to Sebright and returned to Toronto for continued schooling. Bill enlisted in the Canadian Army in March 1944, receiving training in Toronto, Newmarket and Camp Borden. He received further gunnery training in Petawawa and was assigned as Bren gun carrier with a mortar crew. Bill served in the 2nd Battalion, Irish Regiment. He served in Canada and was discharged from duty in April 1946. He worked at DeHavilland Aircraft refurbishing aircraft; married in 1954 and lived in Kirkland Lake, also Victoria Harbour. He also spent thirty years as a driver with the City of Etobicoke and retired to Shelburne, ON where he attends get-togethers with other Veterans at Shelburne, Legion Branch 220. Bill is also a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 220 in Shelburne. BERNIER, Benoit Benoit was born in Saint-Édouard-de-Lotbinière, Quebec on June 16, 1927. He enlisted in the Navy in September 1947 and served in Canada until his discharge in September 1972. Benoit is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion. BERESFORD, John Stewart “Jack” Jack was born in Toronto, Ontario on January 5, 1918. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force with the 427 Squadron on November 1, 1941. Flying Officer John Stewart Beresford was killed in action on August 9, 1944. His Halifax bomber crashed in the English Channel during night operations again a V1 Rocket Site at La Neuville, France and the entire crew of seven was killed. Jack’s body washed ashore and was buried in Calais Canadian War Cemetery. Jack had been shot down earlier on March 24, 1944 by friendly fire anti-aircraft when his plane strayed over London during an air raid, where all the crew except the pilot bailed out and survived. Jack is commemorated on Richmond Hill’s cenotaph, has a memorial plaque in the local Presbyterian Church and a street named after him in the town of Richmond Hill.
