65 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BESSEY, Glen Joseph Glen was born in Windsor, Ontario on June 3, 1925. He enlisted in the Army on January 14, 1944 with the No. 21 Canadian General Hosp. He served in Canada, England, France and Belgium during World War II. He was discharged on April 13, 1946. He is recognized for his service by France and awarded the Legion of Honour Medal. He is a 57 year Royal Canadian Legion member of the Belle River Branch 399. BINNING, John Edward “Jack” Jack was born on February 18, 1923 to parents Charles and Ethel (Coglin) of Wallace Township and had five siblings. As an employee of the Ford Motor Co., in Windsor, Binning enlisted in the Army on September 26, 1942. Jack trained in Kitchener, Ipperwash and Petawawa. On March 4, 1943 he proceeded to England, remaining there until D-Day when he went into France and later into Belgium. Since July 1, 1945, he was in Germany. In 1945 he returned from service and helped his parents on the family farm while also collecting milk for both Wallace and Carthage Cheese factories. During the winter he would work with the Department of Highways. Jack married Shirley Haddow and they farmed for 31 years after which time they moved into Listowel. They had three children - Brad, Joanne and Allyn and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a loyal Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Listowel Branch 259 for 55 plus years. Jack passed away in his 84th year in 2007. BEVAN, Emrys Joseph Emrys was born on February 1, 1921 in Breconshire, South Wales to Joseph and Cecelia Bevan. He enlisted in the Army and served with the Essex Regiment in Windsor, Ontario from 1939 to 1941. In June 1942, he was called up for active duty with the 30th Reconnaissance Battalion where he served in the United Kingdom and in Europe until November 1945. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and the 1939-1945 Star. In August 1950, he returned to active duty and was sent to Korea with the Canadian Army Special Forces 2PPCLI as a Vickers gunner where he held the rank of Sergeant until his discharge in 1952. He received the United Nations Service Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation which was the first to be given to any Canadian unit for their part in the Battle of Kapyong. Upon discharge he returned to Windsor where he married former CWAC Sergeant June M. Brewer and raised seven children. He worked for General Motors from 1940 until his retirement in 1987. He received full pension for injuries overseas and was laid to rest on October 24, 1991. He was a Life Member of Legion Branch 255 in Windsor.
