69 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BLACK, Jennifer Ann Jennifer was born in Kent, England on January 1, 1939. She comes from a military background having two uncles who served during World War I and her father served in the RAF and uncle in Army during World War II. Jennifer enlisted in the Air Force in May 1957. She worked for the Canadian Defence Liaison Office in London, England and when they told her what a beautiful place Canada was, she joined the RCAF. Jennifer was shipped over to Canada where she enjoyed a short career in Clerical Administration. She became an air force wife, volunteering in Community Theatre, many military and civilian activities and enjoying everywhere they were stationed. Chris and Jennifer have been married sixty years. BLACK, Robert John “Bert” Robert was born on July 1, 1879 in Fergus, Ontario. Bert and his wife, Mary, had two children and at the time of his enlistment and living in Fernie, British Columbia. He worked as a Railway Superintendent but was also active in the Militia for three years, serving as a lieutenant in the 107th East Kootenay Regiment. He enlisted on December 13, 1915 and was assigned to the 103rd Battalion with the rank of Captain, later promoted to Major. He left Canada on July 23, 1916 and was transferred to the 16th Reserve Battalion on January 9, 1917 with final placement with the 54th Battalion (Kootenay) fighting as part of the 11th Infantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Division on March 28, 1917. Twelve days later, Bert led his men during the assault on Vimy Ridge. During the attack on April 9, he was wounded three times. He was transferred to No. 6 Casualty Clearing Station but died on April 12 from his wounds received in action at age 36. He was buried at Barlin Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France. The Cross of Sacrifice was sent to both his wife Mary and his mother Margaret Ann Black. He is listed on the War Memorial for Fernie and District, BC and the Fergus Cenotaph. BLACK, Noel E. J. “Chris” Chris was born in Timmins, Ontario on December 25, 1929. In June 1951 Chris enlisted in the Air Force; he did not complete Basic Training and instead was chosen to participate in the Tri-Service Precision Squad who performed at the Canadian National Exhibition and other State and Provincial Fairs. He then went on to become a Radio Operator and took part in SHORAN, the geodetic survey of Northern Canada flying in Lancasters, Dakotas and Cansos. Following this he served at 4 Wing Germany and played trumpet in Station Bands and appeared in Variety Shows. At all RCAF bases where he was stationed, he had his own orchestra and played many a mess hall dance. Chris’ last posting before retiring to private business was at the Recruiting Unit in Toronto. He was discharged in February 1975. Chris and his wife Jennifer had three children. Their eldest son served 38 years in the RCAF retiring as a Lieutenant-Colonel.
