77 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BOW (SMITH), Gladys Gladys was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England on April 2, 1925. She joined the A.T.S. (Army Territorial Services) as an ambulance driver transporting causalities and body parts to various hospitals in Southern England. At war’s end she became a staff driver and not only did she see but smelled the pile of rotting dead bodies in the Holocaust. She wore the 21st Army Group badge. She earned the Battle of Britain and the 1939-1945 War Medals. Upon discharge she and her friend Pat immigrated to Windsor, ON. Here she met her husband-to-be John in the Windsor Regiment’s Sergeants Mess. They were married on November 20, 1954 and have three children, Susan, Rusty and Jeffery. She was an active well-liked member of Highland Creek Royal Canadian Legion Branch 258. Gladys passed away on September 21, 1991 at 67 years of age. BOW, John M. K. John was born on May 3, 1926 in Windsor, Ontario. At seventeen and a half he was underweight (82 lbs for a 6-footer). He unsuccessfully tried to join the Essex Regiment, the Navy and the RCAF. At eighteen he was drafted; took his basic training in Chatham; took advance training at Camp Ipperwash; and was posted to No 5 C.D.M.S. in Woodstock, Ontario for the duration of the war. Here he tried to join Legion Branch No 55 but was told he was too young and is still wearing an Army uniform. At war’s end he enrolled in the Militia where he took an Army Call-Out position until 1960. He retired as a QMS(WO 2), RCEME. He earned the 1939-1945 Victory Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the Long Time Service Medal. He married his wife Gladys on November 20, 1954. After visiting the many Legion Branches in Windsor he joined Lt. Colonel Warnica Branch 578. When he moved to Scarborough he transferred into Highland Creek Legion Branch 258. He is a Life Member and is currently the RSM and padre for its kilted Colour Guard. He was a founder and President of the Scarborough War Veterans’Association. BOW, Henry Henry was born in 1922 in Windsor, Ontario. He was employed by the DeVilbiss Manufacturing Company before and after World War II. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1940 and served with the Iroquois Squadron in London, England as a LAC member in their ground crew photographic section. He earned the Defence of Britain Medal; the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 19391945. He first joined The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 594 in Tecumseh then, near life’s end, transferred into Branch 255 in Windsor. He was married with no children. Henry passed away in 1997 at 75 years of age.
