87 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BROWN, Stephen M. Stephen was born in Belfast, Ireland on March 10, 1889. He came to Canada and was employed as a trunk maker. He enlisted in the Army in London, Ontario. He served in England and in Europe with the 33rd Battalion during World War I until his discharge on October 14, 1919. When he returned to Canada after the war, he lived in Vancouver, BC. Stephen passed away on February 28, 1945. BRUBACKER, Donald Warren Donald was born at Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital on October 3, 1919 to Homer and Alma Brubacker of Kitchener, Ontario. He had two brothers, Leonard and Vernon and three sisters, Eva, Rita and Doris. He attended Suddaby School, Elmira High School as well as Kitchener and Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School. Prior to the war, Donald worked as an Assistant Salesman with Coca-Cola. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force on June 24, 1940. He was a Pilot Officer, stationed with RCAF 149 Squadron. Pilot Officer Brubacker and his crew were reported missing on October 20, 1941. He is buried in Schoonselhof Military Cemetery in Hoboken, Antwerp, Belgium in Grave II-H38. Pilot Officer Brubacker was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Air Crew Europe Star, General Service Medal as well as the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. His mother received the Memorial Cross. He is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario. BROWN, William Grant “Bill” Bill was born in Cobourg, Ontario on July 15, 1918. He enlisted in the Air Force on April 25, 1942. Bill served doing Morse code duringWorldWar II and was discharged on January 12, 1946. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, 1939-1945 Star, Defence Medal and the France and Germany Star. After returning from overseas he joined the Customs and Excise department in 1947 as an Inspection Officer at the Cobourg ferry terminal. The ferry which ran between Cobourg and Rochester, New York, stopped operation in 1950 and Bill was then transferred to Belleville, Ontario. He continued to work there as a Revenue Canada’s Customer Inspector until he retired in 1983. He was a forty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Cobourg Branch 133. Bill passed away on October 20, 1999.
