89 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BRYCE, Donald Gordon “Don” Donald was born in Watford, Ontario in June 1923. He enlisted in the Air Force and was transferred to Canada’s Paratroop Battalion after joining the Ordnance Corp. at Petawawa. After winter training at Fort Benning, Georgia, the unit moved to Shilo, Manitoba and then overseas in August 1943. In October 1943, Don had completed his 19th jump, which qualifies for Paratroop Wings. Don was the eldest of fourteen children. Gordon and Donalda Bryce received the news that their son had been killed in a British motor crash. He passed on January 1, 1944. BRYDGES, Nelson Garnet Nelson was born in Camlachie, Ontario on July 15, 1920. He enlisted in the Army on June 30, 1941 with the 7th Field Engineers Sapper 3rd Division. He did one month of training in London at Wolseley Barracks, two months in Chatham for Basic Training, two months in Petawawa for advanced training with guns, pontoon and bailey bridges. He left Halifax on December 6, 1941 and arrived in England on Christmas Day. His first two weeks were spent in a cove holding unit in southern England. The next two years were spent in various locations receiving training for engineering and dispatch riding on motorcycles. Nelson was a member of the advance unit clearing Juno Beach of mines and moving obstacles from the shores. After the beaches were cleared they moved to Carpaque Airport near Caen clearing land mines. He continued with the unit through France and into the Belgium cities of Brussels and Gent. He spent a full winter in Nijmagen, where the army was held in a pocket. When the war ended Nelson was in Norhorn Germany and was returned to England. He received his discharge papers at 14:57 hours on October 3, 1945 at Wolseley Barracks in London. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Sarnia and Wyoming for forty years. Nelson passed away on April 20, 2008. BRYCE, William “Douglas” Douglas was born near Watford, Warwick Township on July 31, 1942. He was raised on a farm, after his parents passed away. Doug lived with his brother in Sarnia when he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on September 21, 1961. He sailed on the HMCS Terra Nova, HMCS Restigouche and HMCS Bonaventure. Doug sailed out of home base Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was released as Leading Seaman in September 1969. He was an Engineer Artificer (Stoker). Doug married Maureen Millard and raised three daughters and they now live in Campbell River, Vancouver Island. Doug is retired. He is a five-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 137 in Napanee.
