91 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BUCHANAN, Roy Clarence William Roy, son of William (Bill) Buchanan, was born on October 17, 1949 in Galt, Ontario. He enlisted in the Canadian Army Regular Force on October 2, 1973 in Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. After basic training in CFB Cornwallis he completed his Infantry training in Camp Sarcee at CFB Calgary. He served in the 1st Battalion PPCLI stationed in Calgary, AB and the 3rd Battalion PPCLI stationed in Victoria, BC. He completed two tours of duty with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus with the 1st Battalion PPCLI in 1978 and the 3rd Battalion PPCLI in 1988. During his service he trained throughout Canada including the CanadianArctic and participated inAid of the Civil Power Operations. He also saw service in Norway, Australia and the United States. He was honourably discharged on January 10, 1993 with the rank of Warrant Officer. He was awarded the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, United Nations Peacekeeping Medal for Cyprus and the Canadian Forces’ Decoration (CD). Roy presently resides in Port Alberni, BC and is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 293. BUDDELL, William Thomas William was born on October 1, 1920 to Percy and Flora Gertrude Buddell of Kitchener, Ontario. Prior to the war, he was an insurance clerk at Mutual Life. He also had some auto mechanic experience as his family had a garage. William enlisted with the Army on July 25, 1941 and was stationed with the Royal Canadian Dragoons - RCAC 1st Armoured Car Regiment. Lieutenant William Buddell was killed during active service onApril 16, 1945. He is buried in Grave 7, Row D, Plot 12 at the Holten Canadian War Cemetery in Netherlands. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 as well as the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. His mother received a Memorial Cross. He is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in the City Hall in Waterloo, Ontario. BUCHANAN, William Henry “Bill” Bill was born in Toronto, Ontario onApril 18, 1924. Leading Seaman Buchanan (sonin-law of Clarence Smith) enlisted in the RCNVR in London, ON in the fall of 1939. After basic training at HMCS Cornwallis he served in the North Atlantic in minesweepers, corvettes and destroyers. Two ships he mentioned were HMCS Medicine Hat, minesweeper and HMCS Chaudière, destroyer. He was honourably discharged in 1946 as a Leading Seaman. Bill was awarded the 1939-1945 Star (France and Germany Bar), Atlantic Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Bar andWar Medal 1939-1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 121 in Cambridge. Bill passed away on April 11, 1990.
