3 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND Within these pages, you will find the stories of true Canadian heroes. Those who dedicated their lives to the service of this country, from the shores of Normandy to the streets of Kandahar and beyond. By recognizing the valor and the pride of our veterans in the pages of Ontario Command’s Military Service Recognition Book, the Royal Canadian Legion is protecting their legacy. This book is a living testament to those who served before, and a reminder of the devotion to duty that can be found in the ranks of the Canadian Armed Forces, the Commonwealth and Allied Forces today. As Premier of Ontario, and as a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion Coronation Branch 286, I want to thank the Legion for the extraordinary role that they play in our communities. From educating the next generation about the sacrifices made to safeguard our shores, to supporting veterans as they transition to civilian life, the Legion works every day to preserve the true meaning of duty and sacrifice. These are the stories of the men and women in uniform who stood strong in defence of our freedoms. They are also the stories of our fathers and mothers, our sons and daughters, our husbands and wives, our family and our friends. I hope you find them as inspiring, and as humbling, as I do. The Hon. Doug Ford Premier of Ontario A MESSAGE FROM PREMIER DOUGFORD

5 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT On behalf of all Legion members, it is truly my honour to welcome you to the Sixth Edition of our Military Service Recognition book! This latest edition continues to honour our Ontario Veterans, both those living and those who have passed - To those who defended and to those who continue to defend our Canadian values, our freedom and our way of life. The MSRB, Volume VI, displays photographs and narratives of many hundreds of Veterans, bringing us a little closer to these courageous men and women who were, and are, available when it matters most! MSRB will help preserve a little history and allows our Veterans to share their incredible stories with all, including our future generations. Partnering with Fenety Marketing, this project has, to date, earned approximately one million dollars for Ontario Command. These funds have been solely dedicated to assist our Veterans with transition programs. We are grateful to the MSRB committee Chairman Ron Goebel, and our committee members Mary Ann Goheen, Carolyn McCaul as well as our fantastic Provincial Headquarters staff for creating and growing this highly sought-after publication. It is a credit to the creative talents of these members, and this certainly upholds the Legion's mandate of Remembrance. Thank you all! Every single Veteran! We Will Remember Them! 7 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND A MESSAGE FROMTHE CHAIRMAN It is an honour and a privilege to bring you greetings and introduce you to Volume V1 of our annual Military Service Recognition Book Program. Our mission in the Royal Canadian Legion is to serve Veterans, which includes serving military and RCMP members and their families, to promote Remembrance, and to serve our communities and our country. It is also our duty to perpetuate the memory and deeds of the fallen and to pass on to their families and descendants the traditions for which they stand. Recognition and Remembrance are small ways we can show that their sacrifices are not forgotten. We do this through the annual publication of our MSRB in fulfilling our mission and duty to our Veterans. Through our first six publications, we have been able to recognize over 4200 of those who have served and are serving in our Canadian Armed Forces. Through this program, we have also raised much needed funds to assist in providing assistance to our Veterans through various Veteran Transition programs supported by Ontario Command. The success of our program during our first six years would not have been possible if it were not for the combined support, cooperation and dedication of our Branches, Zones, Districts, and Command in promoting our program on a regular basis to our membership, our Veterans, and to the families of Veterans throughout Ontario Command. My sincere thanks and appreciation to each and every-one involved for the dedication given towards the success of our very important program. Keep up the good work in promoting our program and obtaining Veteran submissions! Special thanks to our two hard-working coordinators, Carolyn McCaul and Mary Ann Goheen. Their dedication towards our program has been outstanding. Also, a special thanks for all of the support we have received from our staff at Ontario Command, our Provincial President, Garry Pond, members of our Ladies Auxiliary and all of my fellow Senior Elected Officers of Ontario Command. Thank You as well to our publisher Fenety Marketing and all of their staff for all of their support, cooperation and understanding in making our first six books the success that they have been. It is only through everyone’s efforts that we will continue to be successful in telling the story about our Veterans in communities across Ontario. It has been both a privilege and an honour to have served you as Chairman of this great Veterans program since its inception in 2013. Ron Goebel Chairman Military Service Recognition Book Program Ontario Command

Military Service Recognition Book Volume VI 10 There are numerous benefits to joining our apprenticeship program including hands-on learning, meeting new people with similar interests, learning while earning and further discovering your interests in the trade. We hire apprentices from the ICI sector and local students interested in engaging in an apprenticeship program with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). At the Maintenance Construction and Skilled Trades Council, we assist students by helping them get started with the right affiliate. They then attend school three different times over the course of their program for eight weeks at a time, this is the in-class portion of the program. The whole program runs for approximately 5-6 years. Currently, we have 20 apprentices working at the TDSB. We are available to assist you in any further inquiries you may have. Maintenance, Construction & Skilled Trades Council 95 Shorting Road, Toronto, ON M1S 5B9 Tel: 416-406-0115 Fax: 416-406-3410 Email: jb@tradescouncil.com tradescouncil.com Proud to Support and Honour our Veterans The Maintenance and Construction Skilled Trades Council (MCSTC) represents traditional unions and 20 individual trades. Past divisions of the maintenance, construction, and facility management have achieved a significant amount of recognition from both the National and International. This is due to the fact that they attained ISO 9002 Registration and National Quality Institute awards. Furthermore, management was amongst the first public sector divisions to receive such recognition. As a result, we presently use this acknowledgment as a goal for the Council to reach and to surpass in the near future. The MCSTC has implemented many business practices which are not usually found in other public sector and unionized maintenance and construction departments by using creative business methods, staying competitive and having the ability to work within tight budgets. For instance, we portray the ability to confront and negotiate with private sector construction contractors in hopes of establishing construction projects at the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and facilities. While the TDSB embraces fair wage policies that help ensure the TDSB attracts and retains skilled trades, especially in a boom construction times where private sector rates for skilled trades are exceeding the public sector, this is no rite of passage for TDSB skilled trades to perform all construction projects. If the TDSB skilled trades can offer the lowest bid against private sector contractors in tendered projects, we can be awarded the work. The bidding process also helps ensure the TDSB gets on-going competitive pricing for construction projects.

11 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND A MESSAGE FROMTHE PUBLISHER Fenety Marketing is very proud of its participation in the publication of The Royal Canadian Legion – Ontario Command’s Annual Military Service Recognition Book. It is always an honour to work with The Royal Canadian Legion on this historic series of recognition books, which offers another avenue to continue its mandate as “Keepers of Remembrance” so that the selfless contributions made by our Veterans will not be forgotten. This sixth edition in the series devoted to recognizing veterans and ex-military service personnel throughout Ontario coincides with the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings of World War II. Our Canadian troops made history as part of the Battle for Normandy, which initiated the effort to liberate western Europe from the Nazis. I would like to thank the citizens and business owners of Ontario who have supported this very worthwhile project of The Royal Canadian Legion, as it is their support that makes this legacy of The Royal Canadian Legion possible. “Lest We Forget” Mark T. Military Service Recognition Book Volume VI 12 The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) honours all those who have served in the military to defend our Canadian rights, freedoms, and values. Democracy comes at a fearsome cost. Whenever called to defend it, Canadians have willingly paid the price, whether on the battlefields of Europe, Korea, and Afghanistan, or in the tense border areas of the globe. Those who serve show us, in the most vivid way, that preserving our values means standing up for those values. That is what our union has been doing for over a century, first as the Ontario Civil Service Association, and now as OPSEU. We are dedicated to fostering a just and caring society. The spirit of altruism that inspired so many to offer their lives for others inspires us today. We give thanks to all those who gave so much of themselves for the good of so many others.
