99 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CHEVRIER, Edgar Edgar was born on May 1, 1924 in Rourget, Ontario. On May 3, 1944, at the age of eighteen, he joined the Algonquin Regiment of the Canadian Army where he became a Sergeant, and eventually a Master Staff Sergeant. He was stationed in Holland, France and Germany during World War II. Edgar was an entertainer in the Canadian Army Show, performing in a band called the Arkansas Travelers. Edgar was accompanied by his younger brother Bert who was later killed in action. After the war, Edgar became a heavy-duty diesel mechanic at Algoma Steel. He loved sports and was a trainer for the Soo Falls Doran’s Juvenile Hockey Team and assistant coach for the Soo Canadians Hockey Team. He continued to entertain and became known as “Algoma’s Singing Cowboy”. Edgar passed away on December 27, 1971. CHRISTMAN, Percy Percy Christman was born in Port Elgin, Ontario on March 1, 1917 to Arthur Wellington and Sarah (Sumpton). A few years later, the family moved to Glidden, Saskatchewan. Percy had four sisters: Winnie, Muriel, Audrey and Alma and one brother, Melvin. In 1938, the family moved back to Port Elgin. Percy joined the military in 1940 and was attached to the 98th Anti-Tank Battery. He was shipped overseas duringWorldWar II and served in the Dutch, German, Belgian and Italian Campaigns. He was discharged in 1945. After the war, Percy worked as a carpenter in Parry Sound and then eventually in Kitchener. Percy married Lila Hodge in 1955 and they adopted a daughter, Lori, in 1959. Percy worked with the Waterloo Region School Board. He was involved with the Armories in Kitchener and was a 60-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530 and did many repair jobs in the building. He was also a charter member of the K-W Khaki Club. Percy passed away on January 14, 2009 with interment at Memory Gardens in Breslau. Percy’s name has been inscribed on Plaque #8 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. CHRISTIANSEN, Oscar Waldemar Oscar was born on September 27, 1908, in Pembroke, Ontario to Reverend BH Christiansen and his wife Paula. He worked at Snyders Limited in Waterloo as a Superintendent in Costing within the business. Oscar married Elisabeth Rae in 1930 and had one daughter. Prior to enlisting with the Active Air Force, Oscar served over eleven years with the reserves and was Acting Regimental Sergeant Major with the Scots Fusiliers of Canada. He had shown exemplary character throughout his tenure with the Scots. He enlisted on January 9, 1940 in London, Ontario with the Army and quickly attained the rank of Captain with the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment, RCIC. Oscar was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 as well as the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. His wife received a Memorial Cross. Oscar is gratefully remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo”, his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in City Hall of Waterloo, Ontario. Captain Oscar Christiansen was wounded in battle in Italy and died as a result of the wounds on December 4, 1944. He is buried in Grave 5, Row E, Plot 3 at Faenza War Cemetery in Italy.
