101 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CHRISTOPHER, William “Arthur” Arthur was born in Welland, Ontario on May 20, 1912. On September 19, 1944, he enlisted duringWorldWar II in the Army’s Royal Canadian Artillery and served in England, France, Holland and Germany. He was discharged on May 8, 1946 and received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and One Overseas Bar. When Arthur returned home from the war, he went back to work at McMasters Hardware Store. His family was glad to see him home safe. Arthur loved hockey and built a backyard rink every year to teach his children to skate and play hockey. They all loved to fish and water ski. He and his wife had six children and fifteen grandchildren. Arthur was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Talbot Trail Branch 613 in Fonthill, Ontario for five years. He passed away on January 29, 1975. CICHOWICZ, Tadeusz “Ted” Ted was born in Gawlow Pomorze, Poland on November 17, 1921. He joined the Polish Forces under French Command and took part in the French Campaign. He crossed the French/Swiss border with his unit and was interned by the Swiss authorities. He escaped to France and joined the Foreign Legion. He was released in 1943 and arrived in the United Kingdom via Gibraltar. He joined the Polish Navy under British command. He served on ORP Dragon, homewaters, convoys to North Russia, Normandy on June 6. They shelled Juno Beach in support of Canadian landings. They were torpedoed in the English Channel on July 7, 1944. He was posted to ORP Conrad, home fleet and first ship into the port of Antwerp. He was posted to ORP Baltyk. He was honourably discharged on October 23, 1946 at the rank of PO II. Ted was awarded Polish Sea Medal, French Médaille de la Marine de Guerre, British 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, France and Germany Star, Arctic Star, The War Medal 1939-1945, Military Cross of Polish Armed Forces in the West. He returned to Belgium, married Wanda, and had four daughters. He immigrated to Canada and worked in mines and as a painter in Barrie. Ted passed away on December 29, 1985. CICHOWICZ, Stanislaw Stanislaw was born on January 27, 1919, in Steinkendorf, Prussia. He joined the Polish Army on October 2, 1939 along with his brother Tadeusz. He was in the 1st Division 3rd Co. Grenadier. While in France, Private Cichowicz was captured and escaped on May 23, 1942, but was recaptured in Colamar. He was liberated by the Russians on June 23, 1945, and freed and demobilized in Paris. Stanislaw laboured in Stalag 17A Kaisersteinbruch, Stalag 7A Moosburg Bavaria, Stalag 17B Gneixendorf Linz and Stalag 41. Stanislaw was discharged on August 14, 1945. He immigrated after the war and worked in Abitibi Paper Mill in Sault Ste. Marie and was married to Irene. He has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 418 for thirty years.
