115 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND COURTNEY, William John William was born in Belwood, Ontario on August 20, 1893. He enlisted in the Army on March 23, 1916 and served with the 153rd Battalion during World War I. William was killed in action on April 5, 1918 in France and is buried at Vimy Ridge. COYNE, Kenneth Dale Kenneth was born in Thessalon, Ontario on July 11, 1923. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps on November 9, 1942 and was stationed in Toronto, Nova Scotia and Labrador. In November 1944, he was transferred to the Canadian Infantry Corps and went overseas for training in England. In March 1945, he joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada in Northwest Europe and on into Germany. Kenneth was discharged on April 8, 1946 and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, 1939-1945 Star and the France and Germany Star. After the war, he married his high school sweetheart, Pauline Tees, and they had four children. Kenneth worked at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario as a Sergeant in Plant Safety and Security. Kenneth was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 Sault Legion for 28 years. He passed away on June 27, 1981. COVINGTON, William Henry William was born in Bedfordshire, England on January 3, 1873. He served as a bombardier in the Royal Artillery for eleven years before moving to Dereham, Ontario to engage in farming. William was 42 years old when he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force with the 8th Canadian Field Artillery on July 21, 1915 during World War One. William was killed in action in the vicinity of Vimy Ridge, France on May 8, 1917.
