125 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DEAN, Norris Elson Norris Elson Dean was born in Elmvale, Ontario on July 5, 1895. Prior to World War I, Norris married Anna and worked as a mail carrier. On May 31, 1916, he joined the military and was assigned to 177th Battalion, ‘A’ Company. On November 27, 1916, Norris was given an honourable discharge based on compassionate grounds. He was a long-time member of The Royal Canadian Legion, first with Branch 50 in Kitchener and then with Branch 530 in Waterloo. Norris passed away in 1969 and his name has been inscribed on Plaque #1 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. DENNE, Donald James “Don” Donald was born in Newmarket, Ontario on October 24, 1958. On August 19, 1976, Don joined the Canadian Forces under the Officer Candidate Training Plan and after many years of soldiering, studied and earned his bachelor’s degree through the Royal Military College of Canada in 2001. Commissioned into the RCR inAugust 1977, he served all three Regular Battalions, as well as the Canadian Airborne Regiment where he commanded the Regimental Pathfinder Platoon, at that time Canada’s elite force. His OUTCAN postings include Germany, England where he served on exchange with the British Parachute Regiment, the United States where he served as a Canadian Forces Liaison Officer, Belgium and Italy where he ran the Defence Relations portfolio for six countries. Don’s overseas missions included Cyprus in 1989 (Operations Officer 1RCR), Bosnia in 1999 (Deputy Commanding Officer 2RCR), and Afghanistan in 2003 (Commanding Officer 3RCR). As Defence Attaché to Italy and Malta, instrumental in enabling efficient Canadian Forces operations during the Libyan conflict in 2011, he was awarded both the Chief of Defence Staff Commendation and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. Don has also been awarded the Order of Military Merit (Officer), the Meritorious Service Medal, the United States Army Meritorious Service Medal and the Republic of Albania Distinguished Service Medal. DEFOSSE, Marco John Marco was born in Trenton, Ontario on January 22, 1964. He enlisted in the Army in March 1981 and served in Canada and in Cyprus with 2 RCR. After his release in August 1984, Marco served with the Department of National Defence for a further eighteen years. Marco is a new member of The Royal Canadian Legion Streetsville Branch 139.
