135 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DOWNEY, John Louis John was born on March 24, 1893 in Langton, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on December 27, 1915 and served with the CEF 128th Overseas Battalion during World War I. John was killed in action on September 27, 1918. His casualty report details that “while in the trenches in the vicinity of Canal du Nord, preparing to go over the top, he was on the top of his trench, rolling up his kit, when a shell burst within a few feet of him and he was instantly killed.” DUDDY, Herbert James Herbert was born on May 25, 1886 in Creighton, Ontario, approximately ten kilometers south of Coldwater. He was the son of John and Margaret Jane (Hawke) Duddy. On April 3, 1916, he enlisted in the Army in Estevan, Saskatchewan, with the 152nd Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I. He was 29 years old and single. Private Herbert Duddy sailed to England on the SS Missanabie, arriving in Liverpool, England on October 13, 1916. He landed in France on November 28 and joined his frontline unit, the 5th Canadian Infantry Battalion. On July 26, 1918, during a raid on enemy positions near Arras, Herbert was hit by shrapnel and was killed instantly. Private Herbert James Duddy is buried at Duisans British Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France. DOYON, Robert Russell Robert was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario in November 1931. On April 1, 1955, he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Artillery, serving in Canada United States of America, Germany and England. He was discharged on November 4, 1986. Robert is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 145.
