137 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DUFF, James Alexander “Alex” Alex was born on February 23, 1893 in Sullivan Township, to James and Margaret Duff. He enlisted in the Army during World War I on July 15, 1916 in Toronto and served in Canada, England and France. Alex was a Private in the C.A.M.C. and the 2nd Canadian Field Ambulance in France. He was discharged on May 17, 1919 in Toronto. Alex married Sylvia Spence on February 8, 1931 and had no children. He farmed and kept bees. Alex took a keen interest in all local activities, particularly in local history with the Bruce County Historical Society, where he held the position of Director on the Executive. He wrote a history of Invermay. Alex was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church, was their Treasurer and was also on the Board of Managers. He once held the position of President of The Royal Canadian Legion’s Tara Branch 383, where he was a member for 33 years. He was also the Branch Secretary there for two years and the Secretary of Arran Tara Agricultural Society. Alex passed away on October 2, 1979 and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Tara. DUNHAM, Reid Reid was born in Arkona, Ontario, Bosanquet Township on February 9, 1919. He was sent to do thirty days of General Military Training in Chatham, Ontario in October 1941. Reid enlisted in North Bay, Ontario on May 5, 1943. He was sent to Brandon, Manitoba in June 1943 and to Wireless School in Calgary, Alberta on June 28, 1943. He then went to High River, Alberta at 5EFTS (Elementary Flying Training School) on January 15, 1944. He then continued to 15SFTS (Service Flying Training School) in Claresholm, Alberta on April 8, 1944. Reid was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on October 20, 1944 and transferred to RCAF Reserve on January 19, 1945. He was also in RAF, RNVR, Fleet Arm, as a Sub-Lieutenant in 1945. Reid was based HMS Macaw in the United Kingdom. After returning from the war, Reid and his wife Kay raised a family in Carlisle, Ontario. He worked for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture. Reid passed away on March 3, 2012. DUFF, Thomas Neil “Tom” Tom was born on February 13, 1896 in Sullivan Township, to James and Margaret. He enlisted in the Army on May 18, 1918 during World War I. Tom was a Private in the 2nd M.D. First Depot Battalion and 1st Central Ontario Regiment. Shortly after he got to England, Tom became ill with acute tuberculosis and was discharged on October 16, 1919. He spent one year, four months and twelve days in the service in Canada and England and then went back home to farm. Tom married Annie Stephens on September 19, 1922 and had a family of seven children. He served on Municipal Council, Reeve, Warden of Bruce County and later ran for Liberal Candidate in the Provincial election and spent two years as a member. Tom was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Maple Leaf Lodge 362, and Tara Legion Branch 383. His name is on the Original Charter and the deed of the Tara Legion. He passed away on October 5, 1978 and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Tara.
