139 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DUNHAM, William Lorne William was born in Arkona, Ontario, Bosanquet Township on February 18, 1921. He enlisted in the Elgin Regiment on June 24, 1940, then sailed to England on September 29, 1942. William was transferred to First Hussars, a Tank Regiment, on November 11, 1943. He landed at D-Day. William served in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He married Ruby Seel of Stockport, England, on July 10, 1945. Ruby arrived in Canada on June 6, 1946. William returned to Canada in January 1946 and was discharged on March 6, 1946 with the rank of Sergeant. After returning from war he began his married life in Arkona, then Sarnia and moved to London. William worked as a carpenter and some years later in the insurance business. William and Ruby raised four children and retired in 1983. William passed away March 20, 2003 in London, Ontario. DUXFIELD, Dennis Dennis was born in England on October 31, 1914. He grew up in the small town of Schumacher, just on the outskirts of Timmins, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in July 1940, just as the war was beginning. He trained in Winnipeg and graduated first in his squad as a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner. Dennis was deployed to active duty in England in July 1941. On the evening of May 20, 1942, Dennis was asked to fly with the Royal Air Force of Great Britain on a mission with Squadron 418, commonly referred to as “night intruders”. They would fly deep into German occupied Europe on bombing missions “messing up” enemy machinery and airdromes. As they were attacking their target of Soesterberg Air Base, 14km east northeast of Utrecht in the German occupied portion of the Netherlands, their Boston Bomber MRIII plane was shot down and crashed in a wooded lot near the airbase. Dennis was a proud member of the RCAF who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the love of his country. He and his two British crewmen were buried side by side in a cemetery in Amersfoort, Netherlands. Dennis left behind his wife Florence (Pilon) and his infant daughter, Denise, who he never got to meet. DUNKIN, Alexander Alexander was born on December 26, 1898 in London, England. He was the son of Alexander and Ellen (Arnold) Dunkin. By 1915, the family had moved to Coldwater, Ontario. On May 23, 1916, Alexander enlisted in the Army during World War I in Orillia with the 157th Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was eighteen years old and single. Private Alexander Dunkin sailed to England on the SS Cameronia, arriving on October 28, 1916. After training in England, he landed in France on September 16 and joined his frontline unit, the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion. Alexander suffered gunshot wounds during the attack on Vimy Ridge, but soon returned to duty. On November 6, 1917, during the assault on Passchendaele, Private Dunkin was hit by machine gun fire and killed instantly. Private Alexander Dunkin is commemorated at the Menin Gate Memorial near Ypres in Belgium.
