147 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ELLIOT, Gordon Russell Gordon was born in Guelph, Ontario on August 28, 1925. He joined the cadet unit of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment and attained the rank of Captain. During WorldWar II, he joined the Royal CanadianAir Force with aspirations of becoming a Pilot, but his colour blindness dashed that dream, so he transferred into navigation instead. A crash-landing during training prompted him to transfer to the Canadian Army where he became a Dispatch Rider. He was named a Dominion Marksman in 1944. The war ended just as he was travelling by train to Halifax for overseas transfer. Gordon married in 1951 and moved to the London, Ontario area. He passed away in 2003 having been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 531 in Ilderton, Ontario for many years. ELLIS, John Walter John was born on February 11, 1895 in Reading, England. He was a married milkman in Tillsonburg when he enlisted on May 1, 1916 to CEF Oxford’s Own 168th Battalion. He served with the Grey’s Horse for three years prior to coming to Canada. John served for almost one year during World War I before dying of gunshot wounds near Aubigny, France on May 13, 1917. ELLIOT, Robert Riddick Robert was born in Millbrook, Ontario on February 16, 1893. In 1915, he joined the 46th Regiment, Ontario for six months and was trained to be a fully qualified stretcher bearer. As a Methodist minister, he enlisted in the University of Alberta Company (Edmonton), 196th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on April 5, 1916, which saw action at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. He survived the war and returned to the ministry in southwestern and northern Ontario. During World War II, he joined the Veterans’ Guard of Canada and was involved in guarding the internment camps in the Windsor, Ontario, area. Robert passed away in 1973.
