155 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FIELD, Wilbert Gordon “Bert” Bert was born in Arkona, Ontario, on October 28, 1922. He enlisted in the Army on October 28, 1942 on his twentieth birthday at Wolseley Barrack, London, Ontario. He took basic training in Listowel, which then brought him to advanced training in Petawawa and Kingston. He left for overseas in July 1943 and was acting Sergeant on the Queen Elizabeth. He was a Gunner and then Lance Bombardier. Bert was in England, France and Germany, Holland and Belgium during World War II. Bert was discharged in January 1946 and returned home to Arkona, Ontario where he owned and worked at “Field Department Store” for 38 years. He married Minnie Rosser and they raised two sons and two daughters. Bert was involved with the School board and was secretary treasurer for Arkona Hydro Commission for many years. Bert was active in his church, sang baritone for Arkona Chapel Trio for decades. He enjoyed one trip to Holland in 1995 for “Thank You Canada Celebration”. Bert passed away on January 19, 2009. FISCHER, Frederick William Frederick William Fischer was born in Logan Township, Perth County, Ontario on June 13, 1896 to August and Emilie (Gloor). Fred enlisted during World War I on January 9, 1918 and was posted to the 1st Depot BattalionW.O.R. Fred was booked to be shipped to England in the middle of February but was hospitalized on February 13 with measles. He was released from hospital on February 25, 1918 and posted back to 1st Depot Battalion. The CO ordered Fred be re-examined regarding his medical condition. Fred was struck from the Canadian Expeditionary Force and discharged on August 23, 1918. Fred married Hulda Emma (Timm) on April 20, 1920. Fred was a long-time member of The Royal Canadian Legion Kitchener Branch 50 and Waterloo Branch 530. Frederick William Fischer passed away in 1965 and his name has been inscribed on plaque #1 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. FINK, Ezra Henry Ezra Henry Fink was born in Topping, Ontario on July 28, 1897 to William and Barbara (Hammer) Fink. Ezra had one brother, Wilfred Henry. He joined the military during World War I on June 18, 1918 and took his basic training with the 1st Depot Battalion in London, Ontario. Due to demobilization, Ezra received an honourable discharge on January 14, 1919. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion in Waterloo and was married to Ella K.Wilhelm. Ezra passed away in 1969 and is buried in the Parkview Cemetery in Waterloo, Ontario. His name has been inscribed on plaque #1 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall.
