Charles spent countless hours with his grandfather, Charles Henry Fleeton, who served with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force during World War I. He was so inspired by his grandfather’s stories that when he became of age, he enlisted with the 48th Highlanders of Canada. He never could read music, but Charlie had an ear for it. He was very adept at playing the piano and the harmonica and he became a side drummer with the 48th Highlanders Pipe Band. During the 1940’s, he moved to Windsor where he married and enlisted with the Essex Scottish Regiment. This is where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. He was responsible for training and preparing the recruits for the onset of World War II. Right to the very end, the military was a major part of his life. Charlie never missed an opportunity to don his kilt, grab his drum and march any parade as a lifetime member of The Royal Canadian Legion Windsor Branch 12. Charlie passed away in December 1991.
