165 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FRECH, S. Jan Jan was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on November 8, 1978. At the age of seventeen, he enlisted with the 49th Field Regiment RCA on September 19, 1996. Jan was discharged on March 15, 2000. FromAugust 30, 2003 to March 13, 2004, he served as a civilian in SNC Lavalin Camp Julien, Kabul Afghanistan in the Main Supply Warehouse. From March 14, 2004 to October 24, 2004, he served in SNC Lavalin, Banja Luka, Bosnia as a Trucker. Between November 8, 2006 and January 23, 2010, he also served in Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, as a trucker, bus driver, equipment operator, and transport dispatcher. Jan continues to this day to work in the trucking industry. He is an eleven-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion and currently a member of Branch 56 Port Colborne, Ontario. FREER, Arthur Edward Arthur was born in Kitchener, Ontario on April 6, 1922 to Edward and Mary Jane (Main) and had a sister Dorothy. Arthur joined the Army’s Royal Canadian Engineers onAugust 19, 1942 duringWorldWar II. He was on the Captain’s launch when they landed on Juno Beach and set foot ashore with dry boots. He fought from Juno Beach through to Holland and then into Germany, where he was when the war ended. He was discharged on February 5, 1946 and returned toAyr, Ontario to wait for the love of his life, Joan Bottom, who he had met in London, England. Joan arrived in January 1947 and they were married seven days later. They raised two children. In 1958, Art joined The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 530 in Waterloo where he was a proud member for 54 years. His fondest memories included visits back to Holland where he had formed a special bond with many of the Dutch people. Arthur died on March 25, 2012 and is buried in the Ayr Cemetery with his father, Edward H. Freer, who had fought in World War I. Arthur’s name is inscribed on plaque #8 of Waterloo Legion’s Veterans Memorial Wall. FREED, James Edmund James was born in Beamsville, Ontario, on October 29, 1877. He had a wife and two children in Tillsonburg when he enlisted into the 168th Canadian Expeditionary Force Oxford’s Own on April 28, 1916, at the age of 38. While Serving with the 21st Battalion during the Battle of Lens, he was reported missing during the day of attacks on Hill 70. James passed away August 15, 1917, at Hill 70, Lens, France.
