189 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HAGELL, James Grant James was born in Elgin County on February 26, 1916. He was living with his wife in nearby Brownsville. Prior to the war, he was employed at the local shoe factory and later Borden’s Milk Company. During 1940 and 1941, he was employed in war related work with Butler’s Stamping and Machine shop in Preston but decided to enlist. Flying Officer Hagell was lost when his Halifax bomber crashed into the sea near Wilhelmshaven, Germany. He passed away on October 15, 1944. HALL, Bruce Gerald Bruce was born on April 21, 1948 in Toronto, Ontario. On September 27, 1966, he enlisted in the Canadian Army Reserves and served with the 48th Highlanders of Canada Pipes and drums as a tenor drummer from 1966 to 1988. He reenlisted in 2002 to 2012 travelling extensively and retired with the rank of Corporal CD. In civilian life was employed with CNR from 1965 to 1971 also employed with the city of Toronto Public Works from 1971 to 2001. Bruce is a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 178 in Bowmanville, Ontario. HAHN, Melvin John Melvin was born in Heidelberg, Ontario on May 18, 1892 to John George and Carolina (Ziegler) Hahn. He worked as a telegraph operator. He received his draft letter to report to the 1st Depot Battalion to serve in World War I on August 1, 1918 in London, Ontario for his medical examination. He was hospitalized on October 2 to the Base Hospital in Niagara-on-the-lake with influenza, released on October 17 and given a seven-day leave. On his return he was transferred to the 259th Battalion and on December 26 embarked from Canada to Siberia, disembarking in Russia on January 15, 1919. He embarked from Siberia aboard the SS Empress of Russia on May 19 and disembarked at Victoria, BC on May 29. The demobilization of the CEF was in force and Melvin was discharged on June 12, 1919. Melvin had three siblings: Elkin Arthur, Gordon Elias and Gladys Marie. He was married to Phyllis Lavina (Schweitzer). He joined The Royal Canadian Legion Kitchener Branch 50 and then Waterloo Branch 530. Melvin died in 1983 and is buried in the St. Peters Lutheran Cemetery in Heidelberg, Ontario. His name has been inscribed on plaque #2 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall.
