193 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HALPIN, John Francis John was born in Smith Falls, Ontario on September 22, 1926. He joined the Canadian Army in April 1945 and after six months of training was on standby for a transfer to Europe. However, the war ended before he was assigned to a regiment. He was discharged in October 1945. John is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 95 Smith Falls for 33 years. HANCOCK, Israel Israel Hancock was born on July 23, 1888 in Cheshire, England to William and Sarah. He was employed as a teamster - skidder and axe man. Israel was married to Martha Alice and they had two children, Phyllis and Basil. On August 23, 1917, he joined the military to serve in World War I and was shipped out aboard the SS Metagama with the Railway Construction and Forestry Depot. He arrived in England on December 14, 1917 and served in England until 1919. He returned to Canada and discharged on demobilization July 11, 1919. He was a 40-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. Israel Hancock passed away in 1961 and his name has been inscribed in Plaque #1 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. HAMILTON, Roy F. Roy was born in New Liskeard, Ontario on November 5, 1936. His military career commenced with enlistment on September 19, 1955 with the Royal Canadian Air Force – Regular Force. By 1956, he was training in Camp Borden, graduating from Number 2 Technical Training School as a photo Reconnaissance Technician. He was posted to RCAF North Bay, serving with squadrons 414, 419 and 433 which he accompanied to Cold Lake, Alberta for annual rocket competition. In 1959, he was sent to James Bay as a photographer working with the United States Investigation Team covering the collision of two USAF aircraft. Roy was discharged in September 1963. Roy transferred to Mount Albert & District Branch 382 of The Royal Canadian Legion in 1994 following the closing of his original Branch. During that time, he was on the Executive Committee - received his past Officer Medal in 2005, has been Veteran Service Officer since 2005 and he was Honours & Awards Chair. Roy was awarded Legionnaire of the Year in 2015. He continues to be involved in the Poppy Campaign and has been a valued member of The Royal Canadian Legion for more than 25 years.
