197 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HARPER, John M. John was born in Toronto, Ontario on June 26, 1917 to George and Grace (Mickle) Harper. A graduate of the University of Western Ontario in 1939 (B.A. Degree), John joined the Army in 1940 with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada as a Private during World War II. He was quickly promoted through the ranks during his service in Canada, the Caribbean, England, France and Holland and was discharged as Major Harper in 1945. In 1943, John married Mary (Jamieson) and they had three children: William, Susan and George. John enjoyed a long career as a lawyer. He was also the President and/or Chair of many clubs, including being a member of the Board of Governors of Wilfrid Laurier University. John was an early recipient of the K-W Citizen of the Year award, and the City of Waterloo named a new street, “Harper Place”, in his honour. After a long and full life, John died on July 10, 2008 at ninety-one years of age and has been laid to rest at Parkview Cemetery in Waterloo. John was also a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530 for over fifty years and his name has been inscribed on the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. HARRIS, Brian Neil Brian was born in Brockville, Ontario on March 11, 1959. He enrolled in the Regular Force in 1978 and underwent training as a Naval Officer until 1980. He released from the Regular Force and joined the Reserves in 1981 as a Land Ordnance Engineering Officer. He was commissioned in June 1979. Brian commanded 22 (London) Service Battalion fromMarch 2003 to October 2007 and 21 (Windsor) Service Battalion from May 2004 to October 2007. He was discharged in June 2008. Brian is a 22-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Vimy Branch 145. HARPER, John Robert John was born in London, Ontario on April 17, 1942. He enlisted in the Navy on December 7, 1960. From 1960 to 1963, he was an aircraft control man on the HMCS Bonaventure. From 1970 to 2002, he served as a firefighter for the London Professional Firefighters. Fifty years later, he returned home as a proud member of the wardroom, HMCS Prevost where he signed up for the Royal Canadian Navy. He was discharged on December 8, 1963. In the picture, John is standing on the deck of his aircraft carrier the Bonny at the age of 23. John has been serving the community for the past 25 years as a volunteer for St. Joseph’s Hospital OR, Children’s Aid Society and the Canadian Cancer Society. Currently he volunteers for the Canadian Mental Health Association where he answers phones for the Crisis Line. John it a three-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Vimy Branch 145.
