39 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BACH, Andrew Andrew was born in Wellesley, Ontario on January 4, 1884 to Andrew and Wilhelmina (Fetter). He had four siblings: Anna, Edward, George and Henry. Prior to World War I, Andrew was working as a mason. On January 17, 1916, he joined the Army in Stratford, Ontario and was shipped out aboard the SS Carolina with the 110th Battalion, arriving in England on November 11, 1917. He took additional training with the 8th Canadian Reserve and was then posted to the 58th Canadian Infantry Battalion. He landed in France in March 1917. On January 8, 1918, he was promoted to Corporal. Later that year, after rejoining his unit from a two-week leave just before Christmas, he was appointed Lance Corporal. The Government was starting to demobilize the Canadian Expeditionary Force and Andrew was shipped back to Canada, arriving in Halifax on March 20, 1919. He was discharged on March 23, 1919. Andrew marriedAnnie Birmingham and they had five children: Gordon, Helen, William, Andrew and Carl. Andrew joined The Canadian Legion of the B.E.S.L. on January 17, 1953 in Waterloo. He passed away on January 24, 1957 and is buried in St. Peters Lutheran Cemetery in Linwood, Ontario. BAILEY, Alfred J. Alfred was born in Toronto, Ontario on December 12, 1921. He enlisted on July 23, 1941 with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He received his basic training at No. 1 Manning Depot in Toronto, completing Aircrew training in Wireless and Bombing and Gunnery School in May 1942. He was posted overseas to Britain in July 1942 joining up with No. 2 Advanced Flying Unit, at Millom Cumbrai and completing training with No. 1 Operational Training Unit at Silloth Cumbrai. Although officially in the RCAF, Alfred was transferred to the RAF and flew with 59 SQN, completing 46 operational sorties from January 26, 1943 to June 4, 1944. From June 16, 1944, to March 21, 1945, he was an instructor at a Wireless and Gunnery School at RAF Mona. Alfred returned to Canada on March 22, 1945, where he worked as a Firefighter from 1945 to 1965. He moved to Guelph with his family in 1965, where he worked for Canadian Tire and the City of Guelph retiring in 1981. After his retirement, he and his family moved to Port Sidney, Muskoka, Ontario. Alfred passed away on April 21, 1989, and is buried in Stevenson Cemetery, Port Sydney Ontario. BAETZ, Otto Otto was born on March 21, 1897 in Mildmay, Ontario. He was drafted into the Army during World War I and reported for a medical examination in London, Ontario on May 13, 1918. He was sent for basic training with the 1st Depot Battalion, Western Ontario Region. Private Baetz left for England in July 1918, where he served for a few short months. With demobilization of the Canadian Expeditionary Force underway, Private Baetz received an honorable discharge on December 28, 1918 and returned to Canada. Otto is deceased.
