441 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND TOSH, Mervin Clark Mervin was born in Almonte, Ontario on October 22, 1922. After High School he joined RCN Volunteer Reserve and became a Gunnery Officer on the HMCS Matapedia RCN. He served in North Atlantic from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. He was discharged on September 26, 1945. After the war, Mervin attended Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario and received his BA in 1950. He then attended Sir George Williams University in Montreal (now Concordia University), where he met his wife Carolyn Wacowich. They were married on August 22, 1953. Mervin received his Business Communication Degree, then joined The Canadian National Railway and worked in Ottawa with Transport Canada. He and his wife built a house on the family farm in Almonte overlooking the Mississippi River. His nephew, Brian Tosh, dedicated a Juno Beach Brick in Mervin’s name located at Kiosk K11, Panel 5, Position 19. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Almonte Branch 240 for 22 years. Mervin passed away November 10, 2007. TREBLE, Gerry W. Gerry was born in London, Ontario on May 19, 1946. He enlisted with the army in 1962. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant with 5 Ordnance Battalion at Wolseley Barracks and later received his Commission while service with 22 Service Battalion. Prior to enrolling in the Reserves, he was enrolled as an army cadet and received training at centers including the National Camp in Banff. Prior to Commissioning, he attained a number of qualifications including the trade of Decontaminator; the Cold War period of the 60’s saw a focus on training in Nuclear Biological Chemical Warfare and related issues. He completed training and assignments in a variety of settings including Gagetown, Ipperwash, Borden, London and Petawawa. In 1969, he transferred to the Supplementary Reserve and pursued a career in education where he served in a variety of roles. He is involved in the following: Royal London Military Institute as President, The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 145 Vimy as 1st Vice President, Garrison Community Council (former President), London Remembrance Day Committee, Mental Health First Aid Veteran Community Certificate and the 1st Hussars Museum Committee. Recent events attended include the 100th Anniversary Battle of Vimy Ridge and the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of Holland. TOSH, Stuart Alexander Stuart was born in Almonte, Ontario on August 9, 1920. He enlisted with the Air Force on July 22, 1941. He served with 403 Squadron, 127 Wing and Spitfire Pilot in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. He was shot down near St. Lo, France on July 19, 1944 and landed in a mine field with wings six inches above a land mine. He knew to walk out of field following his plane’s skid marks. Near the end of war, he flew a Mark 14 Spitfire, fast but not like German jet. During a Peterborough Petes OHL playoff hockey game his grandson Corey was playing in, he bought a 50/50 ticket which was worth about three thousand dollars and the ticket number was his regiment number. He did not win. Stuart met his wife Elizabeth Ann Stanley and married on July 23, 1943, having four children and nine grandchildren. His son Brian dedicated a Juno Beach Brick in Stuart’s name located Kiosk K11, Panel 5, Position 19. He was a fifty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Almonte Branch 240. Stuart passed away December 27, 1996.
