43 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BARNES, Delmar Campbell “Del” Del was born in Nairn, East Williams, Middlesex County, Ontario on June 9, 1918. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served during World War II with 434 Bluenose Squadron in England as a mid upper gunner. He flew in a Halifax bomber known as Happy Valley Harlot and a Lancaster Bomber known as Ghost. Many of the missions the aircraft were loaded with 18 X 500-pound bombs. On August 3, 1944, his crew received a Target Token for the most accurate bomb drop on Forêt de Nieppe. After having completed a tour of operations with 434 Bluenose Squadron, Del was promoted to Flying Officer and became an instructor in England. Del was a longtime member of The Royal Canadian Legion Ailsa Craig Branch 422, during which time he served a term as President. Upon returning home, he purchased a farm in Denfield, Ontario and raised Guernsey cattle. Del passed away on April 20, 1981. BARRIE, Douglas Stanton Douglas was born on July 6, 1922 in Kitchener, Ontario to Ernest and Ruth (Stewart) Barrie. Doug signed up as an army cadet at age sixteen and later joined the Scots Fusiliers. In 1941, he was transferred to the PPCLI to continue training in Britain where he met his future Welsh wife, Talma Williams. By October 1944, after being wounded three times in battle, he was transferred back to Canada for recovery before returning to the United Kingdom. Doug and Talma were married in England on June 1, 1945 and returned to Canada. He re-enlisted in the reserves, rising through the ranks to become commanding officer of the amalgamated Highland Fusiliers of Canada and serving as Aide de Camp to Governor General Roland Michener. He was discharged in 1968. Hours after receiving a standing ovation for a presentation to the regiment at the Feast of St. Andrew on November 29, 2009, this decorated war veteran died of a heart attack on the trip home with his family. He is buried at Woodland Cemetery in Kitchener. Douglas Barrie was a long-time member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530 and his name is inscribed on Plaque #8 of the Waterloo Legion Veteran’s Memorial Wall. BARRETT, Harold Cyril “Jake” Harold was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on February 16, 1930. On August 10, 1949, he enlisted in the CAF. During this time, he was a member of the RCR, RHR and the PPCLI. He served in the Korean War in the fifties and did a tour of duty in Cyprus in the sixties. Throughout his career he was posted to CFB Petawawa, CFB Gagetown; Werl, Germany and CFB Cornwallis. He retired after 25 years in 1975 while in Cornwallis and continued as a civil servant supervising the Combat Clothing Stores for 15 years. While in Cornwallis he was a member of the Bear River Legion in Nova Scotia where he was President, Zone Commander and District Zone Commander and was a member for over 30 years. He assisted many retired members with disabilities requesting benefits. He was also responsible for overseeing the installation of a Carin remembering those lost at war for the town of Bear River. Harold also served as Worshipful Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge in Bear River. He was an active member of the community and was well liked and respected by all who knew him. Harold passed away in 2014 at the age of 84.
