45 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BARRIE, Ernest George Ernest was born on July 10, 1894 in Galt, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on May 18, 1916. During World War I, he served as a lieutenant with the 118th Overseas Battalion in France, Belgium and Germany. After demobilization in 1919, he returned to Kitchener and managed the Barrie Glove and Knitting Company until he retired in 1969. In 1922, he joined the Waterloo Regiment which became the North Waterloo Regiment and the Scots Fusiliers of Canada. He rose to command the Regiment from 1930 to 1934 and again from 1940 to 1945. He commanded the Second Infantry Brigade from 1934-40. In 1973, he was appointed Honorary Colonel of the Highland Fusiliers of Canada for a three-year term. Ernest Barrie was married to Ruth Marie (Stewart) and they had two children: Marjorie and Douglas. He was also a lifelong member of The Royal Canadian Legion. In later years, after the death of his wife Ruth, Colonel Barrie married long-time family friend Beatrice McMurtry. Colonel (retired) Ernest Barrie, OBE, ED, CD, passed away peacefully on October 21, 1989, at the age of 97. BARTSCHER, Arnold Bernhardt Arnold was born on October 8, 1894 in Berlin, Ontario to Barney and Rosinda (Koch). Arnold had three brothers and two sisters. Prior to World War I, Arnold worked in Berlin as a laborer in a rubber factory. On January 7, 1918, Arnold enlisted to the 108th Militia Regiment. He left Halifax on February 16, 1918 and arrived in England aboard the S.S. Grampian. Private Bartscher served in England. After the war, he returned on the RMS Carmania and was discharged on July 15, 1919. Arnold returned to work with his previous employer. He married Alma Schmidt and they had two children. Arnold was stricken with a heart attack while riding home from the K-W Industrial Exhibition and he passed away in the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital on October 5, 1958. Arnold Bartscher is buried in Woodland Cemetery. BARTLEY, Charles Henry Charles was born at Dyers Bay, Ontario on August 9, 1896. He enlisted in the Army onApril 5, 1916 with the Bruce 160 and his unit shipped overseas to England and later to France. He served during World War I as a Combat Engineer with the Canadian Expeditionary Force seeing frontline action in the Battle of Canal du Nord on September 27, 1918 and near Cambrai until Armistice Day. He was discharged on May 17, 1919. Charles re-enlisted in 1942 during World War II and served as a Prisoner of War Guard in Espanola and Gravenhurst. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Wiarton Branch 208 for 34 years. Charles passed away on August 7, 1976.
