47 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BARWELL, Joseph Arthur Joseph was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on December 13, 1968. He started his career with the Canadian Armed Forces by signing up in Calgary, Alberta, from there he was sent to Cornwallis, Nova Scotia for basic training. Upon completion of basic training, he went to Chilliwack, British Columbia for TQ3 Combat Engineer training, and was then posted to CFB Petawawa to 2 Combat Engineer Regiment. After a short time, he was moved into Heavy Equipment Troop and took his Para course. He then went to TQ5 course back in Chilliwack, BC, and returned to Petawawa upon completion. Eventually the para qualified members moved into the Canadian Airborne Regiment where he served with pride and deployed to Somalia. Joseph served with the Airborne up to the disbandment and release from the Forces. He is proud and honoured to have served with this Regiment and the Forces. He will cherish the memories and friends from that part of his life. He currently resides in Port Colborne, Ontario. BAUER, Wilbert Francis Wilbert was born on July 12, 1920 in Waterloo, Ontario to Louis and Otilda (Bender). He also had two sisters. Wilbert worked as a clerk at Dominion Life before he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on December 10, 1940. Stationed with RCAF 425 Squadron, Warrant Officer Class II W. F. Bauer was one of five Canadian Airmen who perished in the crash of the Wellington BJ958 Aircraft on October 24, 1942. They had returned from an operation over Genova and had stopped for refueling in Lincolnshire. They had taken flight for home base at Dishforth, sadly crashing near High Hunsley, Market Weighton inYorkshire. He was awarded the 1935-1949 War Medal, Air Crew Europe Star, Defence Medal as well as the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Wilbert’s mother Otilda received the Memorial Cross. Warrant Officer II Wilbert Bauer is buried in grave 27 in Dishforth Cemetery inYorkshire, UK. He is remembered today as a “Son of Waterloo” and his picture hangs on the Memorial Wall in City Hall in Waterloo. BASS, Robert Walden “Bob” Bob was born in Bosanquet Township, Thedford, Ontario, on January 15, 1918. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on June 11, 1942 and served with 223 Squadron as a Navigator doing Bomber Support over Europe during World War II. While completing his training in Nassau, Bahamas, his plane crashed into the ocean on D-Day, June 6, 1944, giving him life membership in Goldfish Club. Bob had 477 hours of flying time. On December 22, 1943, he had top marks Skyward Observers, in class of 24. He married Helen Storey on March 4, 1944, they had four children. Bob was married a second time to Faye MacLean. He became a teacher after being discharged on September 17, 1945, which took him from Rainy River to Windsor. Bob ended his career at Althouse College at the University of Western Ontario to help launch PEMSTEP program for physical education, math and science teachers. In his retirement he enjoyed being a volunteer, world traveller, antique dealer and collector. Bob passed away on October 24, 2013.
