51 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BAYLISS, George Henry “Ben” George was born in Acton, Ontario on December 6, 1919. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 and served in Europe during World War II as Platoon Sergeant with the Highland Light Infantry of Canada. He trained in Galt, Ontario and landed on Juno Beach, Normandy on D-Day. George was wounded three times and was then sent home. He received his discharge in 1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 197 in Acton, Ontario. George passed away on January 15, 1998. BEAUDOIN, J. Louis “Lou” Lou was born in Champlain, Quebec on February 8, 1928. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force with 426 Squadron on September 14, 1946. He served in Canada and the United States of America. Lou participated in the Korean Air Lift, from 1951 to 1952 from McChord Air Force base in Washington State, USA. Lou was discharged on October 13, 1978. He is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 240 in Almonte, Ontario for 35 years where he currently resides. BEACH, George Henry George was born on July 13,1897, the son of John and Mary (Lang) Beach of Coldwater, Ontario. On October 6,1915, George enlisted inWorldWar I in Toronto with the Army’s 95th Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was eighteen years old and single. Private George Beach sailed to England on the SS Olympic, arriving on June 8, 1916. After training in England for several months, he landed in France on September 16. He later joined his frontline unit, the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion (Western Ontario Regiment). On November 6, 1916, the day of the final assault on the village of Passchendaele, he was hit by shrapnel from an enemy shell that exploded directly over his trench. He was killed instantly. Private George Henry Beach is commemorated at the Menin Gate Memorial near the town of Ypres in Belgium.
