53 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BEAVIS, William Herbert William was born in London, England on September 29, 1925. He was living in Tillsonburg when he enlisted with the armed forces in 1939. At the time, he was a mechanic and truck driver which led him into the 1st Hussars. Serving in England from December 1941 to June 30, 1944, he joined the invasion forces on July 2. Thirty-seven days later, on August 8, 1944, he was killed in action west of the Falaise Road as they attempted to break through German defenses. BELLAS, James James was born in Westmorland, England on March 14,1897. His family immigrated to Mount Elgin, Ontario in September 1913. On June 18, 1917, at 20 years old, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in Woodstock, Ontario duringWorldWar I. James then transferred to the Canadian Expeditionary Force 49th Battalion in France. Private James Bellas was killed in action in Tilloy, France on August 28, 1918 during the Battle of Arras. BECKETT, Gordon Gordon was born in Coldwater, Ontario on October 10, 1896, the son of John and Frances Beckett. On June 11, 1915, Gordon enlisted in the Army during World War I in Red Deer, Alberta with the 12th Regiment Mounted Rifles, Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was nineteen years old and single. Private Gordon Beckett sailed on the SS Missanabie, arriving in Devonport, England on October 9, 1915. After training in England for several months, he landed in France and joined his frontline unit, the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles, on January 29, 1916. Private Beckett was killed in action near the village of Courcelette on September 29, 1916. No details are available as to the circumstances of his death. He has no known grave. Private Gordon Beckett is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial in Pas-de-Calais, France.
