55 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BENSON, Gordon M. Gordon was born on May 30, 1920 in Claremont, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on September 30, 1942. He served at the rank of sapper with the 24th Field Co, RCA (A) in Canada and Aleutian Islands during World War II. He was discharged in 1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Claremont Branch 483 for fifty years. Gordon passed away on August 19, 1997. BERRY, Ewart Gladstone Ewart was born in Brantford, Ontario on May 23, 1898. He was living in Tillsonburg and employed as a clerk when he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force Oxfords Own 168 Regiment on March 2, 1916, duringWorld War I. He had previously attempted to enlist but was discovered to be underage. Private Berry served with distinction as a stretcher bearer in the 18th Battalion until he lost his life on August 15, 1917, to a sniper bullet, when he went to retrieve Lt. McLean during conflict in Lens, France. His death was described as “Most Heroic”. BERDAN, George Henry George was born in Elgin County on May 10, 1910. He was a machine operator at Ford Motor Company of Canada Ltd. On March 6, 1944, he enlisted with the Navy for WorldWar II. George served on HMCS Hunter and HMCS Carleton as a patrol man. He was discharged on June 12, 1944. George is a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 221 West Lorne.
