61 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BLATCHFORD, Thomas Lewis Thomas was born in Strathroy, Ontario on January 14, 1885. He was the oldest son of Reverend Thomas Blatchford of Brownsville, Ontario. Thomas joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force 36th Battalion on April 6, 1915 during World War One. He was instrumental in raising a company of soldiers from the Dundas area and was promoted to Captain for his efforts. While serving in the trenches near Voormezeele, Belgium on April 26, 1916, Captain Blatchford was killed from an explosive shell, at the age of 31. Thomas’ younger brother was also killed in action during World War One. BOPPRE, Carl Carl was born on December 13, 1918 to Leo and Emma Boppre of Waterloo, Ontario. He had two brothers, Gerald and James, and five sisters, Mary, Margaret, Estelle, Helen, and Marcella. Carl enlisted in November 1941 and joined the Army – Essex Scottish Regiment and served in France. Carl’s brother, Gerald, also served with the Army – Algonquin Regiment but was killed during active service in France. Lance Corporal Carl Boppre was discharged in January 1946. He married Eleanor in 1947 and the had seven children: twins Pat and Sue (Alberta), Gerry (Kitchener), David (Ottawa) and Margaret, Theresa and Burnadette (Winnipeg). Carl delivered bread for Weston’s Bakeries for many years. Eleanor and Carl divorced after 25 years of marriage and Carl later married Jean and they moved to Australia where Jean was originally from. When Jean passed away, Carl returned to Canada and lived with his daughter Burnadette in Winnipeg. After a long battle with cancer, Carl passed away in January 1996. His ashes were brought home and a memorial service was held for him at the Waterloo Legion. Carl’s ashes are at Parkview Cemetery in Waterloo. BOLTON, Lawrence Benjamin “Lorne” Lawrence was born on December 10, 1921 in Almonte, Ontario. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was stationed in Canada during World War II. He was discharged on October 5, 1945. During his years living in Almonte, he was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 240. Lawrence passed away on January 10, 1976.
