67 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BOWDEN, Gordon Edwin “Gord” Gordon Edwin Bowden was born on November 3, 1933 in Graniteville, Quebec. Gord enlisted on December 2, 1952 with the Canadian Artillery. He joined the 127th Anti-aircraft replacement 79th Field Regiment in Petawawa in February 1953 and went to Korea. He returned to Korea as a Peacekeeper with the 3rd Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in 1954. When he returned to Canada, he was stationed in the Maritimes as an OP Radio Operator. Gord was released from duty on December 5, 1955. He worked as a machinist in London, Ontario. Gord and Beverley married in 1959 and they raised five sons. The family loved camping in the Thedford, Ontario, area so much that they decided to move to Thedford in the late 1990’s. BOYLE, Henry James Henry was born in Ballina, Mayo, Ireland on August 23, 1985. The family immigrated to Canada and settled in the Hespeler area in Ontario. Henry joined the Army on December 27, 1915 duringWorldWar I and received his basic training in Galt. He was sent overseas on September 25, 1916 with the 111th Battalion aboard the SS Tuscaniaand was later posted with the 18th Battalion and shipped to France. Shortly after arriving in France, he was injured due to exploding shells, first in November and again in December. He was diagnosed with Post-concussion syndrome and returned to England for additional medical treatment. The medical board classified Henry to be medically unfit to be returned to the battlefield. He was then attached to the 4th Canadian Reserve Battalion. Upon demobilization of the CEF, Henry was sent back to Canada and discharged on July 11, 1919. Henry married Luella Groff in 1927 and they lived in Kitchener. Henry was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for forty years; first with Kitchener Branch 50 and thenWaterloo Branch 530. Henry died in Kitchener on July 29, 1981 and his name has been inscribed on Plaque 2 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. BOWDEN, William Alfred Issel William was born in Plymouth, Devon, England on May 22, 1888. He enlisted in the 125th Battalion in Brantford, Ontario on December 4, 1915. He served in France with the 124th and 12th Battalion. He was awarded the Military Medal on October 19, 1917 for saving the life of a fellow soldier, whose arm had been blown off, by applying pressure to stop the bleeding and remaining with him while under shelling. William was discharged June 15, 1919 in Toronto, Ontario. He was a lifelong member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 90 in Brantford, ON. William passed away on June 3, 1960 in Sunnybrook V.P. Toronto, Ontario.
