75 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BROOKS, Warren Cuthbert “Bert” Warren was born in Silver Brook, Ontario on March 15, 1893. He enlisted at Valcatier on September 22, 1914 with the 48th Highlanders of Canada of the 15th Infantry Battalion. The Unit embarked for France in October 1914, on the S.S. Megantic. During the First battle of Messines (France) in December 1914, Warren was severely wounded when a building was struck and collapsed on him hurting his hips and legs. He was buried in earth and sandbags for two hours and was found unconscious but returned to consciousness at the dressing station. He was transferred to Canterbury, England for medical attention. Warren was “Taken on Strength” in January 1916 and transferred to the 92nd Battalion. He remained in England for the duration of the war performing many duties achieving the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Brooks embarked at Liverpool for Canada in March 1919, on RMS Minnedosa, disembarked at Saint John, New Brunswick and Demobilized on March 24, 1919. Warren and family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia for several years where he was a contractor. Warren retired to Dwight, Ontario and passed away on April 21, 1962. BROWN, Gordon Gordon was born in Thedford, Ontario in October 1896. The family later moved to Arkona, Ontario, where Gordon attended the local public school, and then Watford High School. He then joined the staff at Molson’s Bank in Hamilton. In 1916, Gordon enlisted in the CanadianArmy duringWorldWar I and went overseas with the 149th Battalion in March 1917. On reaching England, he arranged for a transfer to an engineering division in order to serve with his brother, Fred Brown. Gordon and Fred were together until Fred was wounded and sent to hospital in Dunston, England in July 1918. Gordon’s theatres of war were England, France and Belgium. On November 6, 1918, he was killed while on active duty. Gordon is buried in the Quievrain Communal Cemetery on the French border of Belgium. BROWN, George Frederick George was born on July 1, 1920 in Tillsonburg, Ontario. He was working on a nearby farm when he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps during World War Two on February 1, 1942. While serving in Italy, the vehicle he was driving came under intense shell fire and he was killed on December 11, 1944.
