79 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BROWN, Thomas Hubert Thomas was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on October 28, 1948. He joined the Air Force on November 22, 1966 and served with the Canadian Military Engineers. He was a construction maintenance technician in charge of construction engineering for the military base. During his military service, he had twelve postings: Lac Saint-Denis, Saint Jean, Mont Apica and Saint-Hubert, Quebec; Gander, NL from 1970 to 1972; St. Margarets, NB; Barrington, NS; Chilliwack, BC; Cold Lake, AB; Winnipeg, MB from 1983 to 1985 followed by a second posting to Chilliwack and his final posting was in Kingston, ON from 1989 to 1994. He was discharged on May 4, 1994. Thomas received the Canadian Forces’ Decoration with Clasp for 28 years of service. Following his retirement from the service, he worked for Defence Construction Canada as the contract coordinator in Kingston. He moved to Tillsonburg, Ontario in 2015 and currently serves as the Sergeant at Arms at The Royal Canadian Legion Varnavair Branch 153 in Tillsonburg. He has two children and three grandchildren. BRUCE, William “Bill” William was born in England on June 24, 1930, to Robert and Grace Bruce; he had three brothers: Robert, Harry and Joseph. Upon finishing school, William joined the Royal Air Force in August 1948 and served in Britain with the Transport Command as a Peacekeeper. When his term was finished in September 1951, L.A.C. William Bruce received an honorable discharge. Bill was married to Teresa Bruce (Stemmler) and father to Charles, JoAnne, James, Mary Lou, William C. and Stephen. Bill took up upholstering as a trade and ensured that all he knew were sitting in beautifully upholstered furniture. Bill was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 530 inWaterloo, ON for twenty years, and also the Royal Canadian Air Force Association, 404 Wing, where he entertained his comrades into the wee hours of the night with storytelling and singing. William passed away at the St. Mary’s General Hospital in Kitchener on April 10, 2016 at the age of 85. BROWNLEE, Gordon Baird Gordon was born in Shetland, Euphemia Township, Ontario, on January 31, 1915. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on October 27, 1942 and served on the 13th Field, Royal Canadian Artillery as a gunner during World War II. His services brought him to Canada, United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He was discharged on February 13, 1946. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Upon returning home from the Army, Gordon worked and raised his family. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Thedford Branch 278. Gordon passed away on October 29, 1989.
