85 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BUTTEE, Steven William Steven was born in Waterloo, Ontario on May 5, 1922, to William and Anastasia Buttee, along with six siblings: Mary, Ann, Carolin, Margie, Jim and Stella. In 1939, Steven joined the World War II effort in Stratford and received some basic training in London, ON. He was posted with the Army’s Highland Light Infantry 9th Canadian Infantry Brigade and was with his unit when they landed on Juno Beach on D-Day. From there, they continued the Caen and Buron Battles. He served in England, Italy, Holland and France during the war and was discharged in 1945. Steven married Wilma McLaughlin and they had three children. Steven was a long-time employee of Carling/Labatt Brewery. He was one of 100 Veterans who started Waterloo Branch 530 of The Royal Canadian Legion and is listed as a Charter Member. He was a very dedicated member with 42 years of continuous membership. Steven passed away on July 26, 1994 and is buried in Memory Gardens in Breslau, ON. His name has been inscribed on Plaque 5 of Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. BYRNE, John D. John was born in Almonte, Ontario on November 6, 1922. He enlisted in the Air Force on June 23, 1941. He trained in Canada in 1942 and 1943 then sailed to England, arriving in Liverpool on June 30, 1943 to continue his training in England and South Wales. On January 19, 1944, he became a member of Squadron 407 serving as a wireless air gunner on their Wellington aircraft, stationed in Chivenor, Limavady andWick. His Squadron provided anti-submarine patrols over the North Atlantic, English Channel, and Irish Sea. He was promoted to Flight Lieutenant and completed his tour of operations with Coastal Command on March 23, 1945. He was discharged on September 27, 1945. For his service, he received the 19391945 Star, Atlantic Star, Defense Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, General Service Medal, Operational Wings and Wireless Air Gunners Badge. He returned to Almonte and married Beatrice Bolton and together raised their family of ten children. He joined the Royal Canadian LegionAlmonte Branch 240 and was a member for 35 years. John passed on February 5, 2000. BYNG, Joseph D. Joseph was born in Birmingham, England on August 8, 1892. He had been employed near Dereham, Ontario when he enlisted during World War One with the Canadian Expeditionary Force 1st Battalion on September 23, 1914. He joined the First Canadian Division at Valcartier Military Camp in Quebec. Joseph was killed in action during the gallant charge by Canadians to close the line whenAfroFrench troops gave way to the oncoming Germans during a gas attack north-east of Ypres, Belgium on April 23, 1915.
