99 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BURTON, James Ormond “Jim” Jim was born on May 22, 1920, in Ottawa, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 at the start of World War II and was posted to Fort William, Ontario as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. It was there that he met his wife, Joan Sutherland, and they were married in 1943. Due to a head injury that prevented him from being assigned overseas, he was posted to Dauphin, Manitoba as a Pilot Instructor on Ansons and Harvards with the rank of Flight Sergeant. Jim was discharged in 1945. Following the war, his flying career took Joan and his two children, Bill and Margaret, to many isolated parts of Ontario. He was an accomplished pilot on DeHavilland Beavers and Bell Helicopters. Unfortunately, he was killed in a helicopter crash while doing mining exploration near The Pas, Manitoba on March 11, 1955. BUXTON, Leslie Gordon Leslie was born on June 21, 1925 in Sheffield, United Kingdom. He enlisted on September 27, 1943 with the Navy during World War II. He served as Chief Petty Officer in the engine room artificer on the HMS Ursa and HMS TYNE in the North Atlantic for D-Day, Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean. Leslie received the 19391945 Star, Pacific Star, and the Victory Medal and was discharged on January 16, 1947. He is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 521. BUTLER, Arthur Stanley Arthur was born on December 25, 1883 in Warwick Township, Arkona, Ontario, the son of Henry and Margret Butler. He was married to Blanche Furlow before he enlisted in the Army on December 20, 1915 in Arkona, Ontario. He joined the 149th Battalion and trained at Camp Borden. As old injuries started to conflict with his training, Arthur was declared medically unfit and was discharged on October 10, 1916. Arthur passed away in 1972 and is buried at Lundy’s Lane Cemetery in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
