105 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CAMERON, William John “Doc” William was born in Huron County, Ontario on February 8, 1921. He enlisted in 1940 with the Elgin Regiment Tank Division and served in England, Italy, Holland, Sicily, and Belgium. He was discharged from the Army in 1945 with the rank of Trooper. He received the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, V.S. and E.M. After his discharge, he married Jessie, worked as a plumber/tinsmith/electrician and oil burner service, and raised their family (Dan, Christine, Betty and Bill) in Hensall. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Seaforth Branch and transferred to Hensall Branch 468. William passed away on June 18, 1987. CAMPBELL, John James Lt John Campbell was born in Galt, Ontario on January 16, 1890. He was a civil engineer who gave up his job to join the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He enrolled on April 5, 1916 and had previously served more than three years as a sapper with two different field engineer units. As a result of his higher education and previous military experience, he was rapidly commissioned into the Canadian FieldArtillery. On November 19, 1917, John was awarded the Military Cross (MC) for courage for carrying a wounded man to safety after a shell landed nearby. John carried the injured man over one mile, in the dark, to an aid station. He never got to wear the medal as he was killed at Passchendaele on October 26, 1917. His award was officially announced in The London Gazette of January 2, 1918. He served in Canada, England, France, and Belgium during World War I. John is buried at the Divisional Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, Row L., Grave 3. John was one of 25 Canadians to be buried there. He was the son of John and Sarah Marie Campbell of Galt, Ontario. John was 27 years old. CAMPBELL, Daniel Michael Daniel was born on January 29, 1929 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He enlisted on January 3, 1948 serving in the Cold War with the Air Force unit 123 Rescue Unit, 108 KFLT #2 FTS, 121 C&RFLT, A.S.U. Trenten, ATCHQ 413 and RSAN NDHQ. Daniel served in Canada being discharged on January 3, 1978. During Daniel’s service he achieved the Chief of the Air Staff Commendation, Canadian Altitude Record, the Air Force Cross, BCAviation Council – Bach & Bevington Air Safety Award. He was also the first recipient of the Royal Canadian Air Force – Gordon R. McGregor Trophy in 1973 for The Defensive Flying Program and he also was invested as an Officer in the Order of Military Merit. On April 27, 1974, Daniel was participating in the Operation Frozen Tusker as Captain of the Labrador 302 and completed the first ever Canadian Military Aircraft landing at the Geographic North Pole. In 1978, Daniel resided in Richards Landing, Ontario where he was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 374.
