129 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND COOPER, Walter Fredrick Walter was born in 1920 in West Gwillimbury, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army in 1939 and served with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and the 4th Canadian Armoured Division. Walter served in England, Holland, France, and Jamaica until his discharge in 1945. He received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with two Clasps. Walter passed away on April 17, 1998. CORNISH, Stanley Charles Stanley was born in London, England on November 3, 1893. He worked in Thedford, Ontario as a cheesemaker. Charles enlisted in the Army on January 3, 1916 and served in England and in France during World War I. Charles was hospitalized after being wounded in August 1918 and January 1919. He joined the Lambton’s 149th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force at the rank of sapper. He was discharged on May 11, 1919. Charles passed away on October 9, 1981. CORNELL, Sanford Ellis Sanford was born on July 1, 1897 in Arkona, Ontario, Lambton County, the son of Andrew and Marion Cornell. He enlisted in the Army on September 13, 1916, joining the 149th Battalion. He sailed on the SS Lapland in April 1917 to England. He served in France in March 1918 with the 161st Battalion. He was wounded in August 1918 and was hospitalized for months. He was discharged in February 1919, returned to Arkona, and married Rhea Thoman. Sanford passed away on September 4, 1972 and is buried at the Arkona Cemetery.
