133 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CRAIG, Murray Albert Murray was born on January 8, 1915 in Ottawa, Ontario to parents of William and Mary Craig. He enlisted during World War II on September 9, 1939 to serve in the Army with the Royal Canadian Dental Corps. Murray served in Canada, England, North Africa, and Italy. He spent from 1954 to 1969 at the RCAF Clinton Base at Vanastra, Ontario as the only Army personnel on the base. Upon his discharge on January 8, 1965, Craig continued at the RCAF Clinton Base as a Firefighter. He received the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, Africa Star and Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and War Medal 1939-1945. He was active in The Royal Canadian Legion Hensall Branch 468 as Membership Chair. Craig passed away on March 30, 2014. CRAMPTON, Thomas Austin Garfield Garfield was born in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario onApril 12, 1923. He spent his youth in Innisville along with his parents and only brother Irwin. He enlisted in the Army in 1941 and was married with a child when he reported for basic training in Petawawa. He belonged to The Irish Regiment of Canada and was shipped to England. From there the regiment disembarked to Italy where he served as a runner. He was badly wounded while delivering messages on September 13, 1944. After recuperating in hospital in England he returned to Canada, received his discharge in 1945, and worked along with his wife Isabel and raised their children. He was a thirty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 192, where he served as past Vice-President. Garfield lived in Carleton Place until his death on October 31, 1974. CRAIG, Vernon Ray Vernon was born on April 2, 1926 in Prince Edward County, Ontario. He enlisted on May 31, 1943 with the Army Regular Force and served with the Infantry in Canada, United Kingdom, and Europe. Vernon was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He was a dedicated member of The Royal Canadian Legion Wellington Branch 160 for 25 years and Branch President from 1973 to 1975. After serving his Country, he was employed as a Security Guard at Mountainview Air Force Base. He was also a farm owner and truck driver. Vernon passed away on October 13, 1977.
