149 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DAY, James Hubert James was born on March 1, 1893 in Burford, Ontario, the son of Charles and Ada Day. He farmed near Ailsa Craig, Ontario when he enlisted in the Army on December 6, 1915, joining the 135th Battalion. He sailed to England in August 1916 on the SS Olympic and served in France with the 87th Battalion in December 1916. James was wounded by shrapnel in the right shoulder in November 1917 at Passchendaele. He was in hospital for months. James was discharged on November 29, 1919 returning home to marry Elthea Wardell. James passed away on June 18, 1964 and is buried at Woodland Cemetery in London, Ontario. de CARLE, Jack Hall Jack was born in Toronto, Ontario on April 25, 1914. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and was stationed in Trenton, Prince Edward Island, England and Scotland as Air Crew Wireless and Air Gunner. After his release in 1946, he lived in Kirkland Lake and Collingwood, Ontario. de CARLE, Irwin Leonard “Len” Len was born in Toronto, Ontario on December 31, 1920. He enlisted in the General Section of the Royal Canadian Air Force on February 4, 1942. He worked on some of the first computers employed by the military during World War II. Upon release on April 3, 1946, he was a member of the Governor General Footguard Band for many years. He was a trumpet soloist at concerts, including the band shell performances at the Central Canada Exhibition with the Footguard concert band and changing of the guard at Parliament Hill ceremonies. He also played with dance bands at the Chateau Laurier. He was employed by the Government of Canada until retirement. Len passed away on August 7, 2020, four months short of his one hundredth birthday.
